My lawn mower will run for about 30 minutes then die and i can't get it to start back up again. i believe it's vapor lock. please help.

Put a wooden clothes hanger clip on the fuel line in about the middle. I would also check to see if your losing fire when it dies.

My walk behind lawn mower is putting out smoke from start up to shutdown?

It is a 22" front wheel drive craftsman about 5 years old.
Full oil and gas and clean air filter spark plug good just in a tight spot and almost imposible to remove
Won't start
No oil drain spot

If you put too much oil in it, it will smoke until it burns all the excess. Check the spark plug often, burning that much oil will foul them pretty quick. Drain the oil and replace it with good new clean oil and be sure that you only put in what the manual calls for.

How to check the engine oil in a common walk behind lawn mower?

After how many hours of work usually you need to add? and how much?

There will be a small plug somewhere around the base of the engine. It's about 3/4" diameter. On small engines there are usually 2 small posts (3/16" dia. x 1/4"tall) on the plug. Grip the 2 posts to unscrew. If it doesn't unscrew easily, lay a screwdriver shank between the posts and use to lever the plug loose. There usually isn't a dip stick on these plugs. Visually check to see that oil is up to the bottom edge of the hole wall. Add oil if it is not. Standard 30wt HD is a safe one to use if there is not a label somewhere on the mower deck designating oil type. Larger engines will have a knurled knob type plug. These usually have a dipstick attached to the bottom of them - similar to a car engine's dip stick, just shorter. Check the oil level by wiping the dipstick clean, reinsert, screw closed, unscrew, remove and read. Some of these dipsticks have just crosshatch markings for level indication. Oil level should be to the top of the crosshatch area. Standard 30wt HD oil is also a safe one if the is no label. Most any car engine oil can be used, but they made need replenishing more frequently if they are the lower viscosity oils such a 10-30/40, 5-40 etc.

Is it absolutely necessary to drain all the gas out of a walk-behind lawn mower before removing the blade?

Or is it enough to just remove the spark plug?

If I do not have to drain the gasoline, is there a certain way the mower should be tipped to avoid gas flowing where it shouldn't?

Thanks!

Rather than tipping the mower on it's side, try tipping the mower back on it's handle. Then just place something heavy on the handle (an extra cinder block comes in handy), and you can get good access to the blade while not spilling a drop of gas. We actually use the bottom shelf of our workbench for this. It works very well, if you don't mind sitting on the floor.

BTW, pulling the spark plug is a great idea that far too many people overlook. Just remember to reconnect it before you try starting the mower, or you'll be pulling the starter cord for a loooooonnnnggg time!! (speaking from experience)

Lawn Tractors vs Commercial Walk Behind Mowers?

Why do most landscapers use commercial walk behind mowers when the cost of a brand new garden or yard tractor is so much less? I was looking to start up a buisness and I found that a 8 - 10 year old walk nehind commercial walk behind mower (36-48 inches) is the same price as a brand new tractor? Anybody with lawn mowing buisness experiance an answer would be appreciated. Thanks!

Commercial lawn mowers are built for just that. Mowing, and a lot of it. They are designed to mow the largest area , for as little time as necessary and transported to the next job. They are also to be used everyday.

Garden tractors are designed to be used once a week, and designed for other uses as well. Attempting to use a garden tractor for commercial use will work, for a while but the tractor will need replaced after the first season or two. Most commercial will mow more grass in a month than most homeowners will mow in three years.
