where can i take my tools to get sharpened?

I wanting to take my garden tools, lawn mower blade and axe to get the items sharpened to make their use more efficient.

Buy a good 12 inch Mill-bastard file. It's cheaper than the sharpening shop. All of the tools except the lawn mower are soft steel and the file will do the job quite well. The lawn mower will take a grind stone of some type.

POLL: Do you have the ability to fix appliances.?

Or do you throw them away, or get some one else to do it. For example, fridge-freezers, washing machines, toasters, hoovers,micro-waves. Even T.V's, computers, watches, your car, lawn mowers, garden tools etc. Just wondering?.

Yes I try to repair everything from a light switch to a computer.
Mostly there is a way, but some products seem deliberately designed to foil the DIY amateur.
There are good reasons to try to fix things:
1. Saves money
2. Good for the environment
3. Boosts your ego if successful
4. You dont have to learn how to use a new appliance.

I find it distressing that so much good kit is dumped; this is completely unsustainable.

What is with this awful craving to buy yard tools and equipment?

I live in a CONDO, for cryin' out loud. I don't even change the ballast on the flourescent lamp! I don't WANT to cut the grass or root out the weeds. I have a really pretty little potted rose on the terrace and it completely satisfies the urge to garden.

So why do the ads for garden tillers, supercharged riding lawn mowers, electric hedge clippers with optional nose hair trimmers, and tree root feeder spikes make me leap for the wallet? Hey, there isn't even any place to store that stuff if I did buy it.

Do you think they are using subliminal messages and manipulating our minds? Or do I need to put on the aluminum foil cap and block the ultrasonic waves from the NSA?

You subconsciously long for a house in the suburbs, 2 1/2 children, a Chevy suburban, and 3 acres of lawn, and a soccor team to coach. You must fight this. At all costs. Step away from the ads.

something to rip up weeds fast?

I live in the mountains and need to pull up a 1/2 acre of ivy, and other wild plants I don't want to start a garden... is there some tool (like a lawn mower) that will do this?
I HOPE I am clear, because I'm new to this, and don't know how to search this on the internet

There is a tool called a rototiller that has blades on it to dig up the ground - you can rent one at a home center or rental yard like Uhaul

  • Garden tools and air pollution. Polluting lawn mowers, weed eaters ...

Most people don’t think twice about mowing and weed eating but did you know that according to the EPA, mowers, weed eaters and other such lawn/garden tools account  for up to 5% of the nations air pollution? This is not surprising when you consider the fact that over 80% of all homes mow and/or weed eat their grass. This adds up to over 50 million homes using 800 million gallons of gas each and every year! The problem is that these tools have not been regulated so unlike vehicles, there are no current fuel efficiency standards. This means that the engines in current use are highly inefficient and have changed very little over the years. The good news is that new laws set to take effect by 2011 will mandate that such tools  cut emissions by 35%. This is a good start but more can be done.

The fact is that most lawns are between 1/5 to 1/3 of an acre, hardly enough to warrant a riding mower or even a gas push mower. Such a lawn can easily be mowed by either a corded or cordless electric mowers . However, most people don’t even consider them because most big box stores put a much higher emphasis on selling the traditional gas mower.  Have you ever even seen a battery powered lawn mower at Home Depot or Lowes? I know I haven’t so I was surprised to learn that there are quite a few models available that have all the power of a regular gas powered mower at comparable prices. So when it comes time  to replace that old mower will you make the green choice? Learn more about electric lawn and garden tools at Greenegarden.org .
