Buying a used mower should be done "in person". Buying one online is just asking for trouble. You should inspect a lawnmower firsthand to make sure it's been properly maintained and/or repaired.
Go to lawnmower shops, check out ads in the newspaper, bulletin boards, etc.....

How can I find the true market value of a used riding lawn mower?



Mowers are hard. Some people do not maintain them at all, and use them over conditions they weren't designed for. So each one has to speak for itself, condition wise. A three year old mower used only a couple of times, could bring as much as it cost when new, since newer prices keep climbing.
