I found quite a decently priced cordless rechargeable reel mower. But is strength/exercise still required to use these devices? And are they just as effective as normal lawn mowers?
Go green and get a push mower the health and monetary benefits are much better and you don't have to worry about stinky smells when you try to start the darn thing(if you can start it at all). Push mowers are easier to store and low maintenance too.

We are moving into a rent house, and we are responsible for upkeep of the yard, but we have been renting an apt so we do not have a mower at the the moment. I have seen the reel mowers, and I like the idea of them because of the safety (we have a two year old and another on the way) and the low low upkeep costs. I have never used one before though, and I am just wondering how people who have used or are using them feel about them. Do they do a good job and are they easy to use? Thank you!
I'm old enough to have used 'push-type' ['man-powered'] reel mowers about the time the gasoline powered reel type mowers were becoming common, and then 'graduated' to the rotary type power mower.
Both the man-powered and engine powered reel type mowers 'actually' do work.
There is a problem in that you can't 'miss' a mowing or the grass blades will be too TALL and the rotating reel will push them downward and 'miss' cutting a lot of the blades. This leaves a 'raggady' looking lawn it you don't go over it again 2 or 3 times depending on the height and thickness of the grass. Weeds are impossible to cut with a reel type mower.
IF it is a man-powered reel type mower, it can work you to death if the grass requires more than an half inch cut off.
Unless the "new" [today's] reel mowers have been improved by putting some kind of guard in front of the reel, they are more dangerous than a rotary mower [because its blade is hidden below the deck].
IF you mow at least once, or twice per week, the yard is level, and there are few or no weeds in your lawn, then yes, a reel mower can do a good job. It does require much more physical effort to push a man-powered type of reel type mower than a push type power rotary, because with the unpowered reel mower YOU are providing the power to spin the reel and cut the grass.
Of course if you buy an engine powered reel type mower the physical effort is reduced because the engine provides the power to cut the grass, and usually to propel the mower.
Unless your yard and lawn condition is ideal for a reel type mower, AND it has some kind of reel cover for safety, then I recommend a rotary type mower.

Thanks a lot--- I looked at Lowe's and Wal Mart and saw NONE! :-(
They actually sell out really fast at most hardware stores.
In our area, Home Depot, True Value and Valu sold them as of last year. We literally had to ask the guy in Valu when they'd come in and have one put aside for us.
Amazon.com has many of them with "super saver" shipping, which means it will come to you.

Whats better. Which one cuts grass more efficiently. Does one have a better effect on your lawn than the other?
Do you mean a reel lawn mower versus a rotary, or a gas lawn mower versus a push mower?
A reel lawn mower cuts more precisely and they use them for meticulously cutting lawns for like sporting events (football fields, baseball fields, golf courses, etc.). A reel lawn mower cuts better and does less damage to the grass. But, it's a lot more expensive and harder to maintain. You have to sharpen all those blades often, because the cutting action is like scissors. A rotary mower is a cruder cutting device (it's like a spinning knife) and it's easier to sharpen the 10-inch or so cutting surfaces of the rotary blade.
I purchased a sunlawn reel push mower and the three part handle is very warped..Will it straighten its self out if I put it together and use it?
It won,t do it by it self . Can you take it back?? If so get your money back go to Lows and get a Scotts you won,t have any problems, hope this helps

Different Types Of Reel Mowers
Unlike the rotary mowers you're used to, reel lawn mowers don't have an engine, relying instead merely on sharp blades and the muscle-power of the operator. Their blades also spin differently than those of a rotary mower. While a rotary mower's blades spin on a plane parallel to the ground, the blades of a reel lawn mower spin at an angle perpendicular to the ground. Cordless mowers work best if your lawn is 1/3 of an acre or less, and if you keep your lawn mowed regularly. They're not effective for larger lawns or for tall grass, since either condition puts a lot of strain on the battery. And pushing them up hills can put a lot of strain on the operator, so make sure you purchase a self-propelled model. Cutting moist grass also strains battery-powered mowers, although, technically, you shouldn't be mowing at all if your lawn isn't dry. Mulching lawn mowers are designed so as to leave behind finely shredded grass clippings. Such clippings can be left on the lawn with impunity. By contrast,...
