Whats better. Which one cuts grass more efficiently. Does one have a better effect on your lawn than the other?
Do you mean a reel lawn mower versus a rotary, or a gas lawn mower versus a push mower?
A reel lawn mower cuts more precisely and they use them for meticulously cutting lawns for like sporting events (football fields, baseball fields, golf courses, etc.). A reel lawn mower cuts better and does less damage to the grass. But, it's a lot more expensive and harder to maintain. You have to sharpen all those blades often, because the cutting action is like scissors. A rotary mower is a cruder cutting device (it's like a spinning knife) and it's easier to sharpen the 10-inch or so cutting surfaces of the rotary blade.

what is a rotery? Do they make lawnmowers with any other type of start other than by pull starting? I can't pull start a mower that is why I have a reel mower (manuel push, non motorized) But I would like to be able to mulch my lawn instead of the generic bagger that it has.
They do make pushmowers (gas powered) with electric start, b&s is one I do know makes them.... I'm not totally sure on small honda powered pushmowers, havn't looked lately.

Like an old fashioned push mower that doesn't use electricity or gas.
Did you like it? Or was it horrible? I'd like to get one, but it'd probably be horrible on my lawn. We have lots of holes and an uneven lawn.
If I got one, it'd be a new one :)
Old reel mowers are a nightmare.
But a nice new reel mower is a dream by comparison. The blades whirr effortlessly, they're sharp, they roll smoothly, and the grass flies as you push the mower in front of you.
A few tips, though - have the blades sharpened once a year - and you CAN'T let the grass get too long - otherwise it is very hard to nearly impossible - depending on the length of the grass. Do it frequently, and it's no big deal. Don't leave the mower in the rain to rust. Keep it clean and oiled and it will treat you well. (I could abuse and ignore my gas mower - but a reel mower will not work well if neglected)
Also - if you have some holes and bumps - you'll get to know them and work out your own path so you don't get a wheel bouncing into one. My own lawn has holes and bumps...I've found that with time, knowing where they are is second-nature, and they aren't an issue for me anymore. (though they would be for someone mowing my lawn for the first time).
A note on powered mowers - electric mowers pollute FAR less - though again, you have to be careful not to let the grass get too long between cuts. Gas mowers - with no exhaust filters, are said to produce more pollutants in an hour of mowing that driving a car 1500 miles. (or more, depending on the study source).
I find my reel mower is an asset. I have had to borrow a neighbor's power mower on occasion when the lawn "got away" from me...but it's still a lot fewer pollutants than using gas every time.

Deluxe hand-reel mower ideal for most turf grasses
I use self-propelled mower. It cuts the grass into tiny pieces that fall back to the yard and decompose quickly, letting the nutruition back to the yard and redcue the needs for fertilizer.
Push (reel) mower is environmental friendly becasue it doesn't produce air and noise pollution. However, it doesn't cut the grass to pieces like the gas lawn-mower. Will it cause thatch problem if the grass left in the lawn?
This question really originated from a dicussion in the environment forum where people are asking how "green" a reel mower is. I am not planning to replace mine.
Thatch isn't cause by clippings, it is formed by a layer of dead roots and stems in an unhealthy lawn. The real mower should do just fine, as long as you don't wait until the grass is 6 inches high to mow it. I used one on my old lawn for several years and never had issues. I'd still use one, but I'm not about to try to mow an acre of grass with a push mower.
I am looking at buying a push reel mower instead of gas/electric.
Our lawn is .71 of an acre. Would it be insanely hard to cut a yard that big with a push reel mower? There is only $30 difference in the price between the gas and push mowers, so price isn't the issue.
ALSO on that note about mowers. We bought a $400 used riding lawn tractor from our neighbor that he had fixed up and used for a year On the first cut, a belt on the mowing deck broke. My hubby keeps buying new belts to hopefully fix it, but they keep breaking too. So, we have a $00 lawn tractor that hubby refuses to talk to the neighbor about- he doesn't want any hard feelings, he says. I'm mad and either want our $ back or him to fix it. Our lawn is a mess, hubby won't buy a new mower, and I have been paying someone to cut our lawn. What should we do about it?
You must be joking, cut over two thirds of an acre of lawn with a push mower, are you the Olympic shot putt Champion ?. Right, forget the push mower, that leaves two options. I. repair the sit on mower or 2. purchase a petrol mower. I think you would get your sit on repaired for much less than the cost of a new mower. Find out your dealers, it doesn't have to be the same maker. Get it in for repair and service. It will be like new when you get it back.......problem solved. By the way, your hubby sounds a bit like me.

Teens Admit To Defacing Bills#39; Player#39;s Lawn - Sports News Story ...
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin is so far willing to forgive and forget after two male teens admitted to police that they defaced the player's front lawn.
Hamburg police Sgt. Thomas Best said Wednesday night that McKelvin is refusing to press charges against two 16-year-olds, who said they were the ones who spray-painted a message and an obscenity across the grass in front of the player's home shortly after the Bills' season-opening 25-24 loss at New England on Monday night. Best said it'll be up to the Erie County district's attorney's office to press charges against the two suspects. Best declined to release the names of the two teens because of their age, but noted they both live near McKelvin's home in suburban Buffalo. The vandalism created headlines across the country, was fodder for numerous sports talk radio programs, and led to several Bills players questioning their privacy and security as they returned to practice to...
