Ever since I can remember, I have begged my dad to by a John Deere Lawn mower. From what I see, they never really break. I hear they are extremely durable. yet my dad has found a stupid excuse to get a troy bilt lawn mower. I am putting my neck out on the line for a John Deere, so I was wondering just how durable they really are.

I myself am a John Deere Service Tech. If you want a durable mower I would suggest getting one from a dealership. The ones that you buy from Lowes or Home Depot are not built as well as one sold at a dealership. Those mowers are what we in the shop call a "Green MTD". Depending on what size yard you have, follow this guide:

1 - 5 acres - X-300, X500 series of tractors. EZ track Zero turn mowers.

5 - 10 acres - X700 series tractors. 2000 series compact utility tractors. 717, 727 z-track zero turn mowers.

10 - 15 acres - 3000 series compact utility tractors. 737, 757 z-track zero turn mowers.

15+ 4000 series compact utility tractors. 777, 797 z-track zero turn mowers.

YES, I#39;m an idiot, I know it, you don#39;t have to flame me! YES this is really bad for your lawn mower! NO you should never do this!!! But ...

While hauling my john deere lawn mower the key apparently blew out. Hauled it plenty of times and it never has gone anywhere.

how easy it to get another one? It's older, probably 10yrs atleast?
update: john deere dealer just called me back, it is very easy to get a new key. just call a dealer.

go to lowe's, they have the universal key that fits (I believe) every JD.

Does anyone know what time of year they go on sale?

I am looking for one for my husband. I have a 20% off coupon that is accepted at both Lowe's and Home Depot but if I can find something "seasonal" as well. That would be great. The coupon doesn't expire until December of 2008.

Has anyone had any experience with buying John Deere riding lawn mowers and bought them "seasonally"?

We have a John Deere Lawn Mower model number L118 42" deck. It is cutting unevenly on one side. The blade on the right side cuts fine but the blade on the left scalps on the left side and leaves a long rough cut on the right of the blade or in the center of the mowing path. We put on new blades, but that didn't help. The blades look even. What else could be wrong?

Easy, either the deck is not level, or the spindle on the left side is worn out. To level the deck, check the tire pressure, 14psi r, 10 psi f, there are two leveling bolts that attach the deck to the lift. On a level surface, set the mower to the correct cutting height and then using a tape measure, check the height of the blade tips with the blades perpendicular to the mower. Turn the nuts on the leveling bolts to level the mower deck. Also check that the front-rear leveling is correct. The rear of the deck should be 3/4'' to 1'' higher than the front. Use the deck leveling bolts and the front hanger.

If the spindle is worn out, there should be a distinct scraping sound when you run the mower.

Take the mower to your local John Deere dealer and they will be able to fix the problem.

I think John Deere makes them all... but they are not all created equal. They make a cheap line they sell through large hardware stores and such. These types do not compare to the quality of REAL JD's that are sold through independent dealers. To see the real deal you need to see a JD dealer.
