160cc lawn mower horse power rating

I noticed this year that mowers are being rated by cc's now

139cc costs about the same as a 6 HP mower last year a 160cc costs like a 6.5 HP mower, Are they the same horse power or are they making them less powerful since they have changed the way the are marketing them ,ie cc instead of HP.

The short answer is about 15 to 17cc = 1 hp or about 1 cu.in. = 1 bhp for a modern car

My 3 Lawn Mowers, Cub Cadet , Troy Built , Simplicity

I need to buy a lawn mower, but I know nothing about how torque rating affects performance. I have seen several lawn mowers with the same horse power that have different torque ratings. Is more torque automatically better?

The area I want to mow is relatively flat and small (apx. 1/8 acre). I just want a standard, push-behind gas mower, but I want it to last. I was looking at the Craftsman mowers at Sears. Any advice on what I should be looking for?

All things being equal, the mower with the higher torque will work less than the lower torque mower. This means it will be less prone to bogging down under load (cutting long, wet grass) and the engine should last longer!

Me and my friend wanna start a lawn mowing company together, we are both 14 and want to know the best approach at going at it. What we were thinking is to post fliers all over our neighborhood, and charge 20$ a lawn as a flat rate. If it is a large lawn should we charge more or should we charge by the hour or wat? Also, is all you need a lawn mower, gas, and a little practice?(Neither of us have any practice at mowing lawns) If there is any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

I am a landscaper and designer. I have had my own business for 8 years. Knowledge and passion are two things that are required for a successful business. My first question to you is, have you mowed your own lawn before? If you haven't, I would start there and learn the different settings of a lawn mower. You have to know your cold weather and warm weather grass types. Bermuda is a warm weather grass and doesn't have to be mowed as much as Fescue.

Before starting any type of business, you must have the knowledge to present yourself to potential clients. Unless you have access to a truck to haul your materials around, you will have to stay in your neighborhood. This could be a good start for you. Learn how to use a blower and a trimmer. These are other tools you will need. Besides gas, you will periodically have to put some oil in the mower. Practice on some lawns before you even begin to approach customers.

You will be in a competitive field, so get some experience and then show people what you can do. I will link you to the site map of my website. A physics problem I can not seem to solve...if you can help please give it step by step not just an answer...no values are given for rate or time, just the fact that the lawn mower cuts the grass in 24 inches length...

It's clearly not enough information to solve the problem.

What else do you need ? (I'll just make up some numbers)
Size of field: 50 yds by 100 yds
50 yds / (2/3 yd) = 75 = # passes up and down the field.

Assuming perfect coverage - no gaps or overlaps
and no time taken for turning around:

If it's a motorized mower and travels 6 mph.
6 * 1760 yds per hour = 176 yards per minute
7500 total yards to move / 176 = 42.6 minutes

If it's a guy pushing a mower at 2 mph,
then 3 x as long: 128 minutes (roughly) 2 hours 8 minutes.

Maybe they want a general formula:

(width of field / 24") * (length of field) * speed of mower
(50 x 36 / 24) x 100 yds / 176 yds per minute) =
75 x 100 x 100 / 176 = 42.61
=

I plug it into an outlet just inside the back door using a heavy duty "outside" extension cord rated for the electric mower...and I wear sneaks!

Yes it is OK to mow when your lawn is damp. However, too wet can be a hazard to the electric cord when wet or dry hands unplug the wet mower from the cord or unplug the wet cord from the wall. Use caution when around electrical appliances and cords when your hands feet and grass are wet.
The wet clippings from the lawn can clog up the mower blades and it can be a tricky job to clean the blades off. So it's really easier to mow when it is a dry day. However, not all weather is dry when we need to mow our lawns.
