My lawn mower engine surges when it is at full throttle and the blades are engaged. I have put a new fuel filter and air filter in but it still happens.
Checkout the fuel system for trash and have the carb adjusted.
I have a lawn mower I picked up on the side of the road for free. Looks like its almost brand new and they said it ran but I'm afraid to start it with no blade installed. Could it possibly damage the engine if I did?
Hmm, no, you probably can't hurt it. You probably won't be able to get it running at all. The flywheel on push mowers is just aluminum, they use the blade to provide the inertia to keep the motor spinning on the compression stroke. An engine that is designed to run no-load will have a cast iron flywheel, to provide inertia.

I have this old lawn mower and I am looking to use the engine for a go kart. It is the "Snapper big six" 6HP engine for a walk-behind mower by briggs and stratton. I am looking for a site where I can go to get the basics down about this mower and hopefully read a diagram about all the parts not only of the engine but of the parts of the mower too. Can anyone find a page where I can learn this? Any other tips about making go-karts!? Thank you!

I have an electric lawn mower engine that I would like to use as an engine for a gokart. Is this possible? Can I connect to batteries?
Go-kart--yes, batteries--no. A bumper-car rink like situation may work. A slot-car track may work as well. Might even try a roller-coaster ride. The idea is that you must keep 110a.c. going to that motor for it to perform right. Trolley cars are my final thought-(with overhead supply lines).
I want to use a riding lawn mower engine and trans to power my new go-kart. The go kart will be used mainly to pull boat trailers, so I need some torque out of this engine, but I would also like to have a cruising gear. Any suggestions?

Is there a governor control on a lawnmowers 18 HP Briggs and ...
Yes it has a governor. It is located on the carb side of the engine towards the rear. It will be an arm sticking up with a rod and spring running to the throttle on top of the carb. You could have lost a spring. There are no valves just springs. The major part of the governor is internal, only the arm is on the outside. Get the engine model/serial number and go to outdoordistributor.com and look up your engine. It will give a blow up view of the carb and springs. If that doesn’t help e-mail me and I will send you a digital photo of mine.
