Crews gain ground on wildfire near Los Angeles as evacuated ...

Fire spokeswoman Jennifer Sanchez said early Thursday that the vegetation-clearing construction of containment lines is designed to keep flames in remote mountain areas above the cities, adding “dozer lines have been successful.” She says 12,000 homes are threatened.

Full containment is expected Sept. 15.

Additionally, a firefighting force atop Mount Wilson has managed to keep flames from reaching communications infrastructure and a historic observatory.

The wildfire, now in its eighth day, has burned 140,150 acres and destroyed 64 homes.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — All residents forced to flee from a menacing wildfire have been allowed to return to survey the damage as crews took advantage of a break in the weather to strengthen their lines around the massive blaze north of Los Angeles.

“It’s like, is this really our house? Is it really still here?” T.J. Lynch said about returning to his home in the Tujunga neighborhood late Wednesday. “Because we had made peace with the fact that we’d never see our stuff again.”
