Sure, I'd go for it...
My 1980 YT16 ford lawn mower with its 16hp briggs going through a fairly deep mud hole to be driving a lawn tractor through. We get stuck but just ...
Yes you can but not more than around sixteen volts. But its only going to work for a short time before your starter burns up or your silenoid fails. I have the same problem with my mower. it will crank up cold just fine but when it heats up and i try to restart it. It feels like there is not enough power to turn it over. I changed the starter and the battery and still have the same problem.

I was on my way to work this morning, and at a stop sign, the light turns green, and I hit the gas, and I suddenly hear this loud lawn-mower type noise. This has never happened before. It's very loud, almost like a huge truck! It's only when I hit the gas or when I am in park. What could this be. I am pretty sure it is not the muffler.
I briefly talked to my friend who also has a Mustang, an 01', she told me this happened to her, and she said it was something that is illegal to mess with? She told me the name of it but I forgot! This is very urgent. She said this happened to her before and her father drilled a hole into something, which made the noise go away! I am clueless.
It could be the Catalytic converter. Inside these environmentally friendly muffler companions is a piece of material that changes unburnt gas and other pollutants into less harmful exhaust by chemically reacting with them. The exhaust then travels through the muffler. After awhile this material that reacts with the exhaust begins to disintegrate to a point that it begins rattling around inside the converter. A simple but illegal solution is to hallow out the converter and let the pieces fall out and simply re install it. This is against the law mind you, and no certified mechanic will do it. Or you could buy a new converter.
If you have a loss of power with this noise, then there is a different problem all together.

Most likely the exhaust flex pipe is broken. it is between the exhaust manifold and the Catilytic converter.
If the DPFE sensor has poped off, it is due to a clogged exhaust.
I have a older ford riding mower. It will start with a shot of starting fluid in the spark plug. Once the starting fluid burns off it stops. I checked the gas line as far as the carb and gas gets to that point. Has new oil and spark plug. What should I check?
Ok... you've narrowed it down to a fuel supply problem. If the mower has been sitting all winter, then you may have a bad gas problem. The smaller the quanity of gas, the faster it goes bad. Even if the gas in the tank is ok, whatever was left in the bowl of the carburator most probably is bad. Loosen the bowl nut (7/16) and allow some gas to drain out. Smell it, if it smells like varnish then its bad. Once you get gas that smells like gas running through you can tighten the nut back up (shouldn't take more than a few tablespoons of fluid). If you get nothing coming out, then the needle has stuck shut to the seat. You can try blowing into the gas tank to try and break the needle loose, or bouncing the mower sometimes works. If you still can't get gas to pass, then you need a new needle and seat, but you may as well get a rebuild kit for the carb. This will include a needle and seat as well as new High and Low speed screws. You may as well rebuild the carburator if you have to go this far. If you do end up rebuilding it, either use carburator cleaner liberaly, or you can soak the carburator in Laquer thinner.
If you need to get the seat out, an aircompressor works wonderful, just blow into the gas in fitting and the seat will pop right out. You'll never see it again, but you'll have a new one so you won't care.
