I'm going to start my own business type thing for small engine repair. Like Lawn mowers, snowmobiles, lawn tractors and things like that. And I was wondering what a reasonable price for labor might I charge...I've never charged anyone for this kind of thing before so I have no idea what to charge per hour or half an hour or whatever....any suggestions?

I suggest going to one or more similar type of repair shop not in your vicinity. I think they are obliged by law to have their prices posted. It will also give you an idea of what type of disclaimer you might need.Also because you will not become a competitor, the owner of the shop might be able to give you some valuable advice. i have taken apart my engine on my riding lawn mower and i need to know how to put it back to getther right so that it is in correct timing i kno that the notch in one of the gears has to line up with a notch on another gear but im not sure which notch on which gear
it is an older lawn boy with a briggs in stratton 14.5 hp engine

what kind of engine is it. Briggs? remove the head. find top dead center slide the cam shaft and gear dot to dot with the gear on the crankshaft.

I broke the rope on my 10 hp lawn mower. Can I buy rope from the hardware store or do I need to buy the starter repair kit the rope is all that broke the handle is still good and reuseable

You can get the rope from a hardware store. Take a piece of the old one so that you get the right diameter. Get good quality stuff so that it lasts. Make sure that when you replace it you wind the spring a bit so that the rope pulls back in.

would you feel comfortable going to someones garage to fix your lawn mower or generator? someone without business insurance? what if this were a friend and they messed it up, would you still feel comfortable with that person?

It is a self-propelled Briggs and Stratton Troy Built that "came with the house". It is shed kept, and just last October I had to take it in for $75 in service. There had been some water mixing with the gas in our gas can and it caused engine problems that were pretty severe. Service, new gas can, life was good again. It has worked fine ever since then, until today. The problem appears to be the exact same problem that happened last fall.

Today it starts easily, but shuts off within seconds. At this point, it is worth it to take this thing in for repairs or am I throwing good money after bad? I am not skilled or knowledged in small engine repair. This is the first lawn mower I have ever had problems with, and I have been a 'mower' for almost 15 years. Is it time to go back to manual lawnmowers? Thanks for any and all advice.

it could be the carburetor needs a good cleaning or the magneto is breaking down and not sending fire to the spark plug.if it's a nice mower it's worth the money. hope this helps.
