why does my electric push lawn mower cut a lot cleaner when i pull it backwards?

Sorry the back side of the blade is not shape. It is flat one side of each end of the blade is sharpened. Yes it is the way the mower picks up the grass as you pull it backwards. If it has been awhile you might want to get them sharpened. But I would not worry about it. Sharpen them once or twice a year, depends on how much you mow.

I am having an electric problem with my push lawn mower. Read on?

It's Yard Machines 4.5 horsepower that is about 4 years old. What am I going to find when I unscrew the cover? I really think the mower is getting no spark. What could the culprit be? Will I mess up the pull cord when I remove the cover? What should I do? Thanks.

Could be a bad ignition module, but they are pretty reliable. If you haven't used the mower in some time, its probably that mice got up in there and made a nest and chewed through the wires. Mice seem to like it there on small engines.

Edit >>> Ok.. I see from another of your questions that you were in the middle of mowing when this happened. That's a strange way for a spark plug to fail and an ignition module to fail. It's probably a short in the kill circuit. For giggles, when you remove the cover, the kill wire is a small, usually white wire about 14 guage that is connected to the ignition module with a push connector. Remove the kill wire and try and start it. If it starts, that's your problem. With the kill wire removed, you'll either have to use the choke to kill the motor, or take a large screwdriver and push it against the spark plug boot and the mower, that should kill the spark. If not flip the boot off with the screwdriver, don't use you hands. That hits with about 40,000 volts. It won't kill you, but it will feel like someone hit you with a baseball bat.

Probable culprits for a shorted kill circuit are the flywheel brake, or down on the carb, if there is a kill point in your throttle, the nylon washer that insulates it may have unseated and the circuit is shorting to ground.

It's time to mow the lawn! What can be done to reduce emissions other than getting a push or electric mower?

Plug-in and push mowers are not practical for those of us with large yards. Is there anything else that can be done to reduce emissions from lawn mowing?
You guys are so funny with your rabbits goats and cows. You may want to have a talk with someone about your animal fetishes. It appears you are also obsessed with global warming because your answers sound like they are aimed at someone who believes in the human cause of it and I'm not.
I'm not sure I buy that it's better exercise with a push because even though I have a self propelled mower, I turn it off because I think it cuts too fast and leaves clumps (I mulch). I think my mower is much heavier to push than ones without an engine.
aGhost - I didn't say I don't think man has an effect on the environment. I just don't believe that man is responsible or can materially effect global warming. That doesn't mean I don't want cleaner air and less toxins that create cancer, asthma and other diseases.
beauty - I guess you are obsessed also. It's goofy to think that some person asking about lawn mowing on Yahoo is going to go out and buy cattle to manage their lawn. I have no doubt that the first two guys were being sarcastic. This internet is a wacky place.
Grizz- I like your suggestion for people who can do it. It's not practical for me because I use my yard a lot and even if I didn't, my homeowners association wouldn't allow what you are talking about. For people who don't have kids and don't use their yards and don't have restrictions it's an option - maybe not to get rid of grass entirely, but to significantly reduce the amount of it.
T.T. - Wow - you got my new name and you are not even from Chicago, Austin or Hawaii! I'm impressed! They have a new CD coming out soon and I got to hear a sampling a few months back when I saw them. It's going to be rockin - not like their last one. Seeing them at HOB in May.

HI!!

Keep that mower engine in tune and the oil changed. A good sharp blade not only produces a nicer cut, it makes the engine work less hard and as a result, it will run cleaner.

A selection of upbeat Poi Dog tunes for your Ipod will make you walk faster as you mow. Less time running the engine may reduce your emissions, too. It's good for your heart as well.

How do you use your electric lawn mower?

We received a electric lawn mower as a gift (it's a second hand mower) my husband has been using it for several months. The only way he can use it without cutting the electrical cord is pushing and pulling the mower with one hand while pulling, pushing, picking the cord with the other. I think it takes double the time cutting the lawn with this machine....is there a tip that you can give us? maybe something we don't know, like a retractable electrical cord...I don't know....something that you can use to be able to push the machine with both hands

BTW "The Man": 'Electric' would mean..... electricity. 'Battery-powered' would mean.... battery. DUH.

I have an electric; takes a few uses to get the hang of it. Most have a handle that 'flips' from one side to the other, so that the cord stays on the same side of the mower, and you don't have to walk backward, or drag the mower - both of which can be dangerous. Check your mower to see if it has a hinge at the bottom, where the handle attaches to the mower. If so, then you should also have a lever that will unlock the handle and allow you to flip it over to the other side.

Once you figure that out: start mowing closest to where you've plugged in, and walk away from it; make sure that where the cord plugs into the handle stays closest to the 'plug in' point at your house. Then, as you mow further away, the cord stays on the grass that's already been mowed.
