gift for the gardening, composting dad?

im trying to figure out a fathers day gift for my dad, and i would like to make it myself. whats a good gift for my dad who loves his compost bin & vegetable garden?

twirly things are cool. like, spin in the wind toys. pretty but also can scare away certain pests like fruit or worm eating eating birds.

like this:
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Pinwheel
plastic is cool of course, or laminated but paper would let you print images off the net. i do Like the solid colors they show in that how2 but just saying since it is father's day like if u know how to print up pix of yourself and family.

if u make the blades rounded instead of pointy and color it right it will look like a flower. but also i have seen some that managed to make the center round somehow. adding a disk or just cutting it right. if u add spacer between disk and part that spins then face can stand still while petals spin.

other famous one for dads is the tshirt. u can write or tiedye with bleach. or dye with koolaid. and also u got the transfers but that is cash, like $8 for ten sheets? but i mean the paper u can iron onto a shirt; u print a picture on the paper first by using the regular computer printer, so u can use family pix or personal art.

then of course a card. or 'coupons'. like for one weed picking session or one car washing, one hug, one movie together, etc. it varies on what u think he needs and what u like plus if u want to just make nice ones or ones that will mostly be budgeting time spent together.

cards u can make online and print out besides all the other ways. Some sites are better than others:
http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oG kkW9zDpK8i4AwYRXNyoA?p=custom+printable+ father%27s+day+card&fr=b1ie7&fr2 =sb-top&sao=1

a funny thing online is making your own magazine cover. like gardening dad of the year or whatnot:
http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0oG kkEw0DpKwfIAvgRXNyoA?p=make+magazine++co ver+-.makezine.com&y=Search&fr=b 1ie7&fr2=sb-top&sao=1

idk if ur dad is online but here in a good link to email him:
http://www.geocities.com/missbanji/seeds wapping.html

^to seed swap boards, usually can get for SASE if u have none to trade. dont go to daves cause its a pay place. check for level of activity b4 u sign to any tho. some are relatively inactive.

also, even if he is not online, lots of dads like to read. Online u can find him neat texts to share and keep him up to date. maybe try searching with your area plus the words "soil survey" for texts he would find fundamental. also, if he likes to try growing new things it is easy to get very important but obscure details online. here is how to find local or cultivation info...

well, i'm going to link u to two threads actually, one about how to find info but the other about making your own fertilizer because it is relatively new and bears heavily on compost tech:

so here they are:

Need suggestions for good children's picture book to go with gardening theme gift... please read more!?

There are many birthdays coming up in August/September in my family. The kids are going to range between 3-5 years old. I have decided that I will no longer contribute to the useless toys that have no educational value that they receive mountains of from the rest of the family each year. Instead, I will carefully and lovingly plan a fun, educational present that they will love just as much as the mind numbing video games!

This year I'm going with a gardening theme. I painted tin buckets, each with different garden related objects (ladybugs, sunflowers, grasshoppers etc.) and found matching gloves, mini shovels and watering cans to go with each tin. I will pick up packets of various vegetable and flower seeds. The last thing I want to go with these presents is a GOOD childrens picture book that has a gardening theme. Something that is going to be colorful and either teach them about the growing process or have a cute story about gardening. Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

There's the classic --The Carrot Seed.

Or Lois Ehlert's -- Growing Vegetable Soup (among other books she's written about the subject of growing).

What are some great Father's Day gifts?

My grandfather (who adopted me at birth and I call him "father") is turning 75 years old shortly after Father's Day, and he is very active physically. He singlehandedly grows a 2 acre vegetable and herb garden, grows peach trees, loves to BBQ, hunt, fish, and he's very intellectual. He loves military history, and discuss you tired with current events. He also loves a good drink and very kind and loving to cats and dogs. With that being said, what are some great Father's Day gifts that caters to his interests? Thank you in advance.

Try http://theratingsguy.com/. They have a new father's day section with some really unique and special gift ideas.

Great way to manage my husband?

I know this might sound a bit hinky, but I really don't intend for it to be such. I have found, with my hubby anyway, that if in the morning I give him a little pleasure (usually oral and/or manual), I own him for the day. He calls me on his way to work. He calls me on his lunch break. He calls me on the way home. And he comes straight home. On weekends when I do it, I have gotten him to clean out the garage and his junk room (without a fight!). He cleared the fields in back of our place for my vegetable garden. He has surprised me twice with gifts and 3 times with taking me out on a dinner date without the kids along.
I was thinking that for 5 to 10 minutes of "work" I am getting mountains moved. My sister and g/fs think I am being manipulative and abusive. All I know is he is happy and I am happy. What do you think, am I a bad wife for doing this?

I am not married yet, in fact I am still a virgin, but, looking at the answers you are receiving here, I would say your husband must think he has died and gone to heaven! I think I am going to do this same thing when I get married and see if I get the same results. The thing I am most impressed with here is that all the guys seem to be on the same page and think you are wife of the century! Hey for ten minutes of "work" you are getting maximum returns on your investment. By all means you need to write a book or get on the talk shows...when women find out about this trick (hahaha) I think divorce lawyers are going to go out of business!

  • Buy Cheap

  • 9 ways a food dehydrator can save you money - Smart Spending Blog ...

This post comes from Alex Wayne at partner blog Wise Bread .

Looking for more money-saving ideas during these tough economic times? Dig that food dehydrator out of storage. This is a frugal living tip that almost everyone can act on. Just by reducing or eliminating food waste, you can save quite a bit of money.

Don't have a dehydrator? These days, you can buy a brand new one for less than the cost of a PlayStation game. Or, visit the flea market or yard sales around the neighborhood. Still can't find one? Try Craigslist. Don't have

Some of these are good reasons to get a dehydrator: you can make great gifts, it's great for jerky lovers etc. But the other points are pretty silly...like cutting down waste. This may sound crazy, but if you routinely buy more fruits and vegetables than you consume, buy less.

And there's nothing magic about the dehydrator that made this author reform her eating habits--she could have done so by simply buying raisins instead of Vine Whips. There's already a miracle product on the market that allows you to buy bulk foods: it's called a freezer. And I know many, many dishes to make "without the added fat and sugar." Craving chips? Eat some heart-healthy nuts.
