There are some great nurseries in LA County, you might like to leave N.Hollywood to go and see some of them. Many yellow page listings (on the internet) also have web sites. Commercially this is often done by putting engine exhaust into the greenhouse. However they also purify that exhaust very well first which will not be possible in your case. Cylinders of CO2 are available, but not cheap. Dry Ice would be the other possibility.

I want to grow herbs for cooking and teas in small containers on an indoor window ledge. I do not know where to begin. Where can I find supplies or a starter kit? Any tips?

Don't laugh but I got the Chia Herb garden at Xmas and the herbs are doing really well. Other then that..just get some good potting mix in little pots.

first of all, you're going to need the equivalent of 8-10 hours of sunlight to grow most of what you'd want...so unless you have a south facing porch, you'll need grow lights...

herbs are probably the easiest indoor plants, some grow without much care on a windowsill...

each plant has specific needs, so you might ask about for details about what you're most interested in...

& right now i cant think of a fruit suitable for apartment growth...
