For my resistant materials second paper on Monday the theme is "Garden Hand Tools".
We need to know about Single and interchangeable tools and i was wondering what you would use on the tool to make it interchangeable so that the head of the tool could be changed into about 3 tools e.g. a trowel, small fork, small rake.
So, what type of joining (fabricating) would you use?
Someone suggested using a threaded or a pinned connection. How would i do that?
Any information you have on garden hand tools would be useful as well please.
Thanks :)
my teacher gave me a sheet all about garden hand tools so our class could prepare for the exam on monday and it said on it that most interchangeable hand tools can be released and changed with just a simple push of a button. This means that many different heads and handles can be used according to what you need to do.
He also gave us a list of materials usually used for garden hand tools, these were stainless steel, high carbon steel, ash (hardwood), polypropylene, pressed steel and forged manganese steel.
A useful website with information on their own garden hand tools is www.bulldoghandtools.co.uk
this website also has a video to show how the tools are made
I hope this helps and good luck in the exam tomorrow!
Fiskars garden hand tool set, including a hand fork, trowel, transplanter amp; floral bypass snips. A home and garden bargain with 10 year ...
This was an unusual looking tool with a claw and had a sharp side to cut also. It was $15.00. I have tried calling the plant sale and they don't remember the name and I have done a internet search with no luck.
I like my hori hori, it's useful for digging, sawing and cutting. Works great for planting bulbs. Here a link to show you: http://www.gardenshoponline.com/catalog/ product_info.php?products_id=112

How would you do the threaded or pinned connection?
Threads wear out too easy I think i'd go with the pin connection like vacuum cleaners use. it is a spring loaded pin that can be depressed to slide of one head to change it to another. More than one of the pins can be used for more strength. Naturally the handle would have to be hollow, therefore metal.
I have three. The garden tool box which stays in the shed.
One indoor which the family men of the house use -- and of which some of the tools are left here and there in whatever drawer or place they have left it.
The third is mine- ( secretly hidden) this is the back up one for when I can't find things in the other box and I need to fix a few odd things now and then haha*
I have one in my trunk my car is where ever I am

Terra Composter: First Look — Cold Climate Gardening
On our large, rural property, we generate a lot more plant and food waste than this 45 gallon composter can hold. But I thought the Terra Composter would be handy during the winter, set up by the back door, where we could deposit our food scraps without donning boots and avoid schlepping a bucket full of food waste through the snow. I suppose we could use shredded bank statements for the “brown,” though I don’t expect much composting to happen in the winter.
Kathy, I am quite interested if this terra cotta composter lives through the winter for you. As a Canadian, I have not seen this composter for sale anywhere here yet. Is this a prototype that they are testing for release on the market next year? It is very attractive, something difficult to find, and desirable if you have a small city garden. I also keep a winter composter by my back door, and move it in the spring. I cannot be bothered to climb the snowbanks to get to the main ones.
Our current compost pile is far enough away from the house that I have no idea what animals are visiting it besides the chickens, who don’t care if they’re caught snitching. It’s inside their enclosure, after all. But every winter we have problems with rodents getting into our old country house. I don’t really want to provide them with a cozy base of operations, nor do I want to come face to face with the enemy when I lift up the lid.
