RESISTANT MATERIALS: what joint would you use for a interchangeable garden hand tool?
Hand and Tool together

For my resistant materials second paper on Monday the theme is "Garden Hand Tools".

We need to know about Single and interchangeable tools and i was wondering what you would use on the tool to make it interchangeable so that the head of the tool could be changed into about 3 tools e.g. a trowel, small fork, small rake.

So, what type of joining (fabricating) would you use?

Someone suggested using a threaded or a pinned connection. How would i do that?

Any information you have on garden hand tools would be useful as well please.

Thanks :)

my teacher gave me a sheet all about garden hand tools so our class could prepare for the exam on monday and it said on it that most interchangeable hand tools can be released and changed with just a simple push of a button. This means that many different heads and handles can be used according to what you need to do.

He also gave us a list of materials usually used for garden hand tools, these were stainless steel, high carbon steel, ash (hardwood), polypropylene, pressed steel and forged manganese steel.

A useful website with information on their own garden hand tools is www.bulldoghandtools.co.uk
this website also has a video to show how the tools are made

I hope this helps and good luck in the exam tomorrow!

This was an unusual looking tool with a claw and had a sharp side to cut also. It was $15.00. I have tried calling the plant sale and they don't remember the name and I have done a internet search with no luck.

How would you do the threaded or pinned connection?

Threads wear out too easy I think i'd go with the pin connection like vacuum cleaners use. it is a spring loaded pin that can be depressed to slide of one head to change it to another. More than one of the pins can be used for more strength. Naturally the handle would have to be hollow, therefore metal.

  • Yard Bird Update | Your Small Kitchen Garden

Blog seem to like Yard Birds as much as I do. I introduced these handmade folk-art lawn and garden sculptures at the end of July.

A local machine repairman designs and assembles Yard Birds using parts of gardening tools and farm machinery. He sells his whimsical garden creatures on the lawn of a church during Lewisburg’s annual Festival of the Arts. Through the rest of the year, the unsold Yard Birds live in the tool shed behind his house.

Yard Birds have clearly found a second home here at Your Small Kitchen Garden. I’ve had to remove some from the Yard Bird Store , but I’ve also added several new designs. The artist has created a few small Yard Birds crafted from hand tools rather than full-sized tools. While a Yard Bird made from a typical garden shovel might stand about 20 inches tall, starting with smaller hand tools results in more demure Yard Birds running about 12 to 18 inches tall.

As I become more involved with Yard Birds, I see more and more possibilities for them. Turns out they add just as much whimsy to a music room or a front step as they do to a garden. If there’s a large potted plant in the lobby or conference room of your office building, a Yard Bird or two would add unique conversational flare. I’d have one in my cubicle or office if I still lived the nine-to-five life.
