You can also find quite a bit of interesting decor at places like Pier1. I have found that if you have a tribal, or African-American "theme" to your lawn decorations, the ones that are in concrete or marble (non-color specific, basically) start taking on an African look, as well.

I am looking for either a red-eared slider or something that I can paint to resemble a red-eared slider turtle. It would need to be heavy and sturdy enough to leave in the yard. Any ideas where I can buy such a statue?
ebay. Check ebay. They have them. All kinds. You probably want to go with terracota clay (unpainted). Just check the seller's rating to make sure they are a good one. There is one seller in particular that might interest you. Go to ebay's searchbox and type in "old farts garden pottery" They dont have turtles this week, but they did last week and they will post them again, especially if you shoot them an email and tell them what you are looking for. They do great work and I have ordered many things from those old farts. They rotate their goods, so check next week if you dont want to email them. If you ask them, they will post the turtles.

I like decorating my lawn and garden but haven't done so because I didn't want it to look gaudy like some people have little garden gnomes and ceramic ducks and such all over the yard. So, I was just wondering what everyone else's opinions on this would be.
If you like lawn ornaments then a few are fine. When people start slowing down to look at the crazy yard, then it is too much. I would say three things in the front yard would be plenty. But you should do what you like and not worry about what anyone else thinks.

What I want to know is, can you actually see this scene in your head as you read it. If you can't, what could I do to improve it?
Its the beginning of a historical literary novel set in the 1850's.
CHAPTER 1
The rain lashed hungrily against the draped windows of the sickroom as I sat beside Mother’s bed. It was one of those days when the world seemed gray, although to my view everything had been gray for so long that it didn’t make much difference whether it was raining or not. I looked at Mother’s wasted face against her red pillow, a mixture of bitterness and pity rising in my throat. I took her translucent hand and ran my fingers over it. Her bones felt fragile, brittle, like a tiny bird’s. She stirred at my touch and her eyes opened.
“Clifton?”
“I’m here.” The last of my bitterness faded as I looked at the brown, circled eyes dominating her white face.
“Do you still resent me?” She whispered, trying to sit up.
I pushed her down.
“What is there to resent you for? I asked with a bitter laugh. “That the girl I loved was a common whore and you knew it before I did?”
She turned her head away.
“Clifton…”
“It isn’t your fault. I know and—”
“Clifton, I need to tell—”
It’s aright Mother. I’m not angry anymore. I—”
“Clifton, listen to me for one moment without interrupting.”
I took her other hand.
“Yes.”
For a moment she just stared up at me, her eyes racked with some kind of pain and struggle. Her head fell slack against the pillow and she whispered,
“There’s something I want you to know—about, Lotte.”
I stiffened; the odor of her medicine suddenly seemed stronger.
“I don’t want to discuss her.”
Her bird hands gripped my own with more strength than I knew she had left.
“You have to listen to me.”
I looked at the flush taking over her face. She was getting too excited. I bit my lip hard.
“Alright, I’m listening.”
Lotte—“she pulled her hands from my grip— “told you the truth.” Her voice was shaking. My body locked into a rigid stillness at her words.
“What do you mean?”
She turned her face away.
“Stottan— forced himself on her…”
The chair beneath me lost all illusion of stability.
“How do you know?”
“I overheard he and his friends talking while they stayed at Northcott Manor.” Her voice was a wisp of sound.
I became intensely aware of the beating of my heart, as if its rhythm was the only thing anchoring me to sanity.
“Stottan hasn’t stayed here for over three years,” I said in a carefully blank voice. I felt shame for myself and rage at her crash over me until I could hardly breathe.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” My voice sounded strange, as it where coming from someone else.
“I—I didn’t want to be you to disgrace us by forming an alliance with that girl.” Her voice sounded like it was about to fall to shreds. Her tiny body began shaking with sobs, but the sound of them seemed distant, and all I could feel was a red heat building up in me until all I felt was anger. At her, at myself, at everything. I stood up and looked down at her sobbing form.
“Do you have any idea what I said to her? I told her that I hated her, I called her a whore…” Mother writhed at my words, but any trace of pity had left my soul. She should suffer, she deserved to suffer.
“She was with child,” I said in a voice of quiet steel. “But she couldn’t have find a position to support it with—no decent person would even greet her in the street, much less hire her after of the lies Stottan told,” My voice lost its quietness. “The lies you knew could have contradicted.”
“Stop it…” Mother’s voice was like a tortured animal. “Do you think I haven’t suffered enough already?”
I walked over to the window and pulled back the red drapes. The rain had slowed to a drizzle.
“No, you should burn in hell for what you did.”
Her sobs intensified.
“Clifton please—”
“I’ll go get Father, I said, and left the room.
Father went to tend to her, and I climbed the stairs to my rooms on the third floor and walked out onto the balcony that adjoined my suite. Wetness dripped down my face. It was raining hard again and every drop seemed to sear down my flesh. I ran my raked my fingers through my hair. Lotte…
I had no idea where she was. She was probably dead, or stuck in a gutter somewhere selling herself to support her child. Stottan’s child. How could he have done it? How could anyone be so cruel? At that moment I could have killed him with my bare hands and sang about it. She had been so childlike, and the brute had—I slid down against the wall and lay against the stone. My body heaving with sobs, my tears mingling with the rain. It was my fault. If only I had believed her. I crawled across the stone and over to the balcony railing. Grabbing the top I pulled myself up on it and looked down at the soggy lawn with its manicured gardens and statues and fountains. I looked down at the concrete below me, and all the anger and shame and guilt inside me joined forces and screamed at me to throw myself onto it. I deserved it. I d
