I want to create a Japanese garden in my backyard can anyone help, provide details and ideas?
The Huntington 12.11.10 7

I am interested in creating a Japanese garden in my backyard, but I have really no idea where to start. I need some plans on where to begin or ideas on where I can go to find ideas on where to start and what to include. Links to pictures or anything would be great. Even sites that I could buy some of the statues and lanterns from would be great as well. Anyone with any ideas please don't hesitate to chime in.
Thanks.

Creating a Japanese style garden is a mindset and not just something you build. The Japanese people's respect and adoration for nature is what you need to discover before you wish to attempt to to build that style of garden. Just your comment about the statues and lanterns says you need to study and contemplate some more before you start.
Step One: Find a local nature preserve or wildlife area away from all people and human remnants. Spend the whole day by yourself out there and observe nature and how it interacts. Study the flow of the land and the interplay plants and the stones and the water . Enjoy your day and try to learn to respect and admire nature for its wonderful beauty.
Step Two: Get some books written by the actual Japanese landscape artisans not some American just churning out landscape books. Get the books that have many pictures of actual Japanese gardens. Study those gardens pictures.
Step Three: Take what you have learned from nature and the pictures you have studied and you can now create a garden.
Below are some links that may help.

Need great ideas for a Japanese type garden?

I have created a new area in my back yard and plan on putting a large Asian statue in the center of this area. I am working on an area behind where the statue will sit to plant bamboo in a controlled area. I am fixing a sort of tunnel and plan to put wisteria on it, to grow over the wire tunnel. I would like ideas on other plants to use in this area to enhance the statue and give an air or serenity. This will be a sort of *secret* garden, as you won't be able to see it all until you go through the tunnel.

I have thought about some peonies, and plan to use white gravel and have black enamel benches in it. I would like to use reds mostly, to give more impact to the overall effect.

I am in zone 6

Azaleas would be nice. For a low growing tree that has that Asian look is the Mimosa. Most Asian Garden don't have alot of flowers in them, they are mostly evergreens is interesting shapes. For your "RED" how about placing high glazed red pots filled with small evergreens that you shape into your own style of Bonzais.

What do you think of this? Leave comment in space for comments!!?

[The rough guide about Nagoya]
Who is interested in Japan?
Who thinks that Japanese cities are so exotic?
Who wants to know a lot about a local city in Japan?
Here is the guide book you really want!

Nagoya is one of the most beautiful cities in Japan. It has am amazing Japanese Garden. There is a big pond and in the pond, there are colourful carps. And in the middle of the forest, you can find a fabulous castle with 2 statues of golden killer whales on the top of the roof and for sure, you will be gobsmacked by its beauty and the amount of people there. Because it’s the most popular place for sightseeing, there’s always a huge amount of people there so on the way to the castle too. It is impossible to go there by car unless you leave your place at 5 o’clock in the morning. However, you can take the metro to go there because there are many metro lines so the city in very convenient and you can go anywhere in the city by taking the metro.

And here is another place which you would love! Many shopping centres are here, waiting for you to come. You can buy anything in there even something from your own country. Also there are tons of books and magazines for kids, teenagers, adults, and old people so literally for everyone. But unfortunately, you can’t find any English books or magazines in any shopping centres so you can just look into Japanese fashion magazines!

In shopping centres, there are a lot of kinds of food from all over the world. You can buy some Chinese or Korean food, special Indian spice, Italian pasta, German white sausages and so on. However, they are unbelievably expensive. You can also buy “delicious-looking” vegetables and fruits but they are either fresh and expensive or not fresh and expensive so I don’t recommend you to buy them but to go to a local Japanese restaurant because you can eat Japanese traditional food and they are really cheap but extremely delicious! You’ll definitely adore them!

And there is 1 thing you’ll definitely be disappointed. It’s that only few people speak English. Of course, nowadays students have to learn English at school however their English isn’t very good so usually, they don’t eve try to speak English to foreigners.

The most important thing which you have to know is about the weather in Nagoya. You may think that Nagoya is not so hot in summer and not so cold in winter because it is located in the middle of Japan but you are absolutely wrong! In the summer, it is too hot and humid so if you stand outside for a minute, you’ll be sweating from all over your body. And if it rains, it gets even worse because it is humid, the atmosphere becomes horrible. In the winter, it is really cold and once or twice in the winter season, it snows heavily.

So you know a lot about Nagoya now. You have to visit and see how beautiful Nagoya is with your own eyes and feel how hot or cold it is with your own body. YOU will be the one to explore and discover the secrets which are hidden in Nagoya!

gegenzahny: No it isn't : she has spelt 'centre' the correct way for every type of English except American.

Who is interested in Japan?
Who thinks that Japanese cities are so exotic?
Who wants to know a lot about a local city in Japan? [A 'LOCAL' CITY? WHAT IS IT LOCAL TO? OMIT THE WORD, IT'S REDUNDANT]
Here is the guide book you really want!

Nagoya is one of the most beautiful cities in Japan. It has am [AN]amazing Japanese Garden. There is a big pond and in the pond, there are colourful carps [THE PLURAL OF CARP IS CARP NOT CARPS]. And [NOT GREAT STYLE TO START A SENTENCE WITH 'AND' in the middle of the forest, you can find a fabulous castle with 2 statues of golden killer whales on the top of the roof and for sure, you will be gobsmacked [NO! NASTY SLANG WORD. 'STUNNED' PERHAPS] by its beauty and the amount [AMOUNT IS OF A MASS OF STUFF. USE 'NUMBER' INSTEAD]of people there [VERY LONG SENTENCE - TRY AND BREAK IT INTO TWO]. Because [LIKE AND, BECAUSE IS A CONJUNCTION, YOU SHOULD NOT START SENTENCES WITH CONJUNCTIONS] it’s the most popular place for sightseeing, there’s always a huge amount [AGAIN, NOT 'AMOUNT'] of people there so [NO NEED FOR THE WORD SO] on the way to the castle too [BUT YOU;RE TALKING ABOUT THE CASTLE SO HOW CAN THERE ALSO BE PEOPLE ON THEIR WAY THERE - I'M CONFUSED AND THE READER WILL BE TOO]. It is impossible to go there by car unless you leave your place [AGAIN 'YOUR PLACE' IS A BIT SLANGY] at 5 o’clock in the morning. However, you can take the metro to go there because there are many metro lines so the city in very convenient and you can go anywhere in the city by taking the metro. [CONFUSED JUMBLE OF A SENTENCE. SUGGEST 'HOWEVER, YOU CAN TAKE THE METRO THERE. THE METRO HA SEVERAL LINES WHICH MAKE IT A CONVENIENT WAY TO GET AROUND THE WHOLE CITY.']

And here is another place which you would love! Many shopping centres are here, waiting for you to come. You can buy anything in there even something from your own country [BUT WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO?]. Also there are tons of books and magazines for kids, teenagers, adults, and old people so literally for everyone. But unfortunately, you can’t find any English books or magazines in any shopping centres so you can just look into Japanese fashion magazines!

[INCREDIBLY LONG SENTENCE] You’ll definitely adore them!

And there is 1 [IN PROSE PEPLL OUT THE NUMBER]thing you’ll definitely be disappointed. It’s that only few people speak English [ON THE CONTRARY, I'D BE DELIGHTED]. Of course [WHY 'OF COURSE'?, nowadays students have to learn English at school however their English isn’t very good so usually, [NO COMMA] they don’t eve[N] try to speak English to foreigners.

The most important thing which you have to know is about the weather in Nagoya. YOU will be the one to explore and discover the secrets which are hidden in Nagoya! [NOT IF I'M SWEATING FROM EVERY PORE I WON;T]
