    Gardens are works of art in themselves and they often inspire their owners to create other forms of art. Perhaps we lack Monet's masterpiece in Northampton but several artists will share their gardens, studios and homes next weekend on the fourth annual Garden and Studio Tour to benefit the Northampton Center for the Arts. The tour is Sunday, Sept. 13, from 1 to 5 p.m.

    "I believe gardening may be the ultimate, albeit illusive and transitory, art form," writes painter Nancy Goldstein in her artist's statement for the tour. "At its best, it combines artistic skills, scientific knowledge, spiritual enhancement and physical discipline - all in the glorious outdoors." Goldstein, who chairs the board of the center for the arts, will open her garden and home for the tour.

    The natural world inspires all the artists on the tour in different ways. Carolyn Gray loves to paint the view of clouds seen out of her bedroom window. Piper Foreso incorporates farm equipment into many of the metal sculptures she displays in her garden.
