can you weld iron ??
October Garden: The Cat I.

i have a garden bench with wrought iron ends and one has snapped. i have an arc welder and a mig welder but i remember being told that you need special equipment to weld iron. what can i do ?

Being you have the equiment i'd try it. But cast is tricky. especially break's. So i would be prepared to go with monty on this. Being it's broken off, this comes from having fixed several different iron part's. Crack's are far different from fixinga part thats broken off.
Thinking of different types of leg's used for this. So it's probably gonna be a small area which makes it harder to repair and hold for long if at all.
I'd was the mig and maybe try grinding a slite taper along the break. But maybe not, thats something i'd have too see and think about. Watch your heat also. To hot it'll be way brittle little to cool it's not gonna stick.

How can I make a small garden bench?
"New Dawn" rose ~ May 2009

I want to make my mom one of those small garden benches for her birthday. She saw one before and she loved it. Its made of all wood with (I think) wrought iron sides and legs. Its a very simple piece. Im not sure where or how to get the iron pieces though. I have searched online and all I can find is the bigger benches. What Im looking for is the type of bench that maybe children can sit on, mostly for decoration. Its about 4 feet long at most and maybe 3 feet high? If anybody has any ideas, plans, or sites where I can copy one from I'd really appreciate it! Thanks so much!
Kinda like a small park bench. Im very crafty so I can do this, I just need more ideas. Thanks!

What is the primitive circular stone structure in front of the Washington DC capitol building called?
fly

When I was young my family visited Washington DC and there was one structure in particular I've been trying to get data and photography of though I've forgotten the name.

It's a small stone structure with benches lining the wall and a wrought iron gate but has no roof and seems to be quite old. There may have been a fountain situated in the middle, not sure though. Possibly a monument of sorts, not entirely sure about that either.

I forget which direction from the Capitol building it resided but it seemed to be located in a garden area.

You're probably thinking of the Summer House on the U.S. Capitol grounds (Senate side); the Capitol grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted:

"The Summer House, a brick structure set into the sloping hillside of the West Front lawn among the paths that lead from Pennsylvania Avenue to the Senate side of the Capitol, has offered rest and shelter to travelers for over a century. Constructed to provide comfort for those who explore the area on foot, it is also a pleasant location from which to appreciate the Capitol's classical architecture and the landscaping that surrounds it...The Summer House was begun in 1879 and completed in late 1880 or early 1881 by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted."

Where would I go to get this neighborhood project started?
A sunny day means more when you have a garden.

So here's the backstory:
I was doing some research at the library on cemeteries to find some family members, when I was browsing through the information and found that there was/is a small cemetery right in my neighborhood. It was a shock to see my street name intersected with a street only a couple of blocks from where I live.
So today I took a walk and when I was within a 1/2 block I knew immediately what plot of land that was! I have often passed it and wondered WHY no one had built on it and it just stands as an eyesore on a corner lot. Really. I believe the book said that it was Inactive, meaning no one is presently buried there. It has a fence around it with another around that one. There's a lean-to inside and trash.
Anyway, I would like to make a neighborhood project, clean it up and create a little meditative-type garden, with a memorial stone, birdbath, benches, where people in the area could come and sit and enjoy a little peace if they wanted to. It would be enclosed with wrought iron fencing. There are houses on 2 sides that I would like to maintain their privacy as well as keep the garden private. It also is about a 1/2 block from a elementary school. So....
How do I get started? Do I go to my Community Board? County President? Historical Society to present my idea and find out about funding? All advice is welcome, but smart-asses aren't. Thanks.

the first thing to find out is what organization is responsible for maintaining cemeteries in your area? Do you have a cemetery district? or are cemeteries overseen by the city? Once that is determined, you have a place to start, talk to the official that oversees the cemetery and find out why it is in its current condition. Let them know that you would like to start a community project. You will need to identify some volunteers, and create a budget, what will it cost to fix this plot? Where will you get the funding?

You might get funding from the city through a grant, but many cities have suffered from this economic time, and so you might need to talk to Kiwanis, United Way, Rotary, or some of the other service organizations. they will expect you to champion and lead your cause, but if you show you are organized and can complete the project, and you have the permission of the cemetery owners, then it should be easy enough to move it forward.
