I have painted probably every room in the house at least two times because when I finish a project, I don't like it. I have spent soooo much money on paint. My style is, well, I'm not sure. Probably Spanish. I like dark wood furniture, wrought iron, leather...I also like simplicity...less is more. After it is all said and done, everything is so dark :( The floor in the living room is dark wood with a light beige sofa and oriental rug with browns and beiges. The walls are also a beige (dark). Everything is so monochromatic in this room. There is a wall that goes from the front door to the back of the house (single story) and passes by the open living room that I mentioned above. This wall is a bright golden yellow. I looks aweful with the dark beigy, tannish, orangy walls in the living room. How do you chose colors to compliment one another without having too much of a color wheel going on.
The golden yellow would certainly seem better as a mustard yellow in my opinion. I would do a red, a nice deep red in the living room. I LOVE reds as well as a dark orange. Make sure it is dark or else it won't fit in with your color scheme. I think that since you like the Spanish look, beige definitely needs to go! Maybe even a dark plum color would work for you too!
Good luck to you!

Here are the details.. It is an enormous room encompassing the Dining Room, Foyer, Kitchen, Breakfast Nook, and Family Room. The flooring can't change, it is a gray/white porcelain tile throughout. Right now the walls are painted a light gray, except for one very large 16 foot tall x 40 ft. wall that is reddish/burgundy. Needless to say, I don't know what we were thinking 8 years ago when we painted it...but it is ugly. Our kitchen cabinets are visible from the room and are light maple. We are in FL, so there is a 3 pane sliding glass door that looks out to the pool. Our DR furniture is a light aspen..similar color to the maple. Our breakfast nook table is wrought iron with a glass top. We will be buying new family room furniture to match the walls.
I'm open to pretty much anything, but we really like earthtones. Oh, and Plantation Shutters will be installed on the windows in a couple of weeks as well. Anyone out there with more creative vision than I? Thanks!
I'm not sure if you like crisp clean looks or textured walls....
I like some texture, so I would go with a really soft toffee color... and probably go with a slightly darker of the same color as a 'color wash'
(color wash would be 1part paint to 1 part glaze rubbed on or brushed on lightly over the 1st color.... i usually rub mine til it just shows the texture but not too much color)
sage greens would be a nice accent color as well.... I would go more neutral on the walls and add the color you like to the furniture or the accents (pillows, frame matting, etc)

I am trying to find some cheap decorating ideas for my living room. The living room is long and we don't exactly have an "entry way" it just opens to the living room which is fine. We have a tall tropical plant by the door and a plant stand with other plants on the other side of the door. I don't care if they stay there. We have hardwood floors that are a light oak color with a cherry "border" and a cherry built in book case. We have a brown leather couch, and a matching chair and ottoman. We have a black coffee table and black end table. For right now the walls are painted a very light creamy peach color, but we will paint later. I'm just trying to figure out what I could hang on the walls mostly, I already have a mirror in here with a small table over that, near the door. And another mirror over the fireplace (though that doesn't have to stay there). I don't know what to put over the couch or over the fireplace. We have really poor lighting in here as well, just 2 table lamps. The layout leaves very little space for more furniture, but I feel like the room is big and empty and boring. We will eventually paint in here with a buttery yellow color. Everything else in the house is wrought iron, so I'd like to keep that throughout if ideas revolve around anything like that.
I would really appreciate some ideas. I don't have a lot of money maybe up to $250 total to spend in here on decorations. Also where is a good place to shop. I have tried Walmart and Target, but even those things seem expensive to me.
Oh yeah I forgot, we also have cathedral ceilings. It makes the room feel HUGE and empty. We'd also like some thoughts on sound dampening if you have any ideas. Thanks.
I love the buttery yellow! Accent with pillows, throwns, rugs in burgandy. Mix solid w/prints. Hang family pics in inexpensive black frames. Shop thrift stores for all these items. Spray paint can work wonders! You can paint lamps, pic frames, etc. You should find a large pic for over your sofa or you could hang a group of pics up there. Over the fireplace replace the mirror with a pic, rod iron piece or a wreath. I use old hardback books. I stack 3 or 4 books and sit knik knacks on them. Very inexpensive. Hang a shelf up high and display items. It will make the room seem warmer. Nice window treaments would really help also. Use your imagination...watch HGTV and check out HGTV.com. Lots of great cheap ideas. You can work wonders with $250. I wish I lived near; I love to decorate. It is a challenge for me....my relaxation. Good luck!

My husband and I are closing on a home in 2 weeks, and I'm trying to figure out how to decorate the living area. It's an odd, small area - Walk in the front door and its an oversize hallway more or less as the living room that L shapes to a small dining area that L shapes again to a dead end kitchen. So like a U shape with a wall between the kitchen and the living area.
It has light colored pergo flooring, and no high ceilings or skylights. And there is a pellet stove in the corner of the living area.
Since we wont have exra money, we have to keep our current furniture for the time being, which includes my husbands black leather couch and love seat.
The dining area and kitchen are going to have black wrought iron pieces (table/chairs and wall mounted pot rack).
With this information, do you have any tips on interior decoration? I need things to help make the room seem bigger, and tips on colors when our furniture is black and floor is light wood.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
(Due to the last time I posted, and with the great answers I got - I'm thinking about a light blue or a light green - trying to convince husband of these though. And trying to figure out a good accent color with those colors)
I think that a vibrant orange or lemon yellow would make a good accent colour - 1 or 2 pillows and a glass bowl of the chosen citrus on the table.

You should paint the whole area one color and make sure the color coordinates well with the kitchen. Lighter colors are better since they make small rooms bigger, but some median tones can work too. The precise color of the flooring and the kitchen cabinets matters.

I would definitely get a big black mirror to hang over the sofa. It will make the room look bigger. Something like these http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/produc ts/10121252 http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/produc ts/00081591
The proportions should be similar to this http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3207/2966 948346_2e7652379d_o.jpg
Window treatments are a toughie- the sofa is black but black curtains are really heavy. I would probably pick a print based on the paint color. Something like one of these: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/produc ts/00160197 http://www.westelm.com/products/r801/?pk ey=cwindow-panels-curtains-shades (this would only work with the grey or rose walls) http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.asp x?c=1288&f=26869 (would work with the beige walls) Pick your paint and curtains together. The same color two shades darker would also work for curtains.

Front doors come in many designs however different periods had very distinctive styles
A typical Georgian door would of been a simple six panelled design without glass.
Georgian houses would have had simple flat frontages. Front doors sometimes had a simple semi-circular fanlight above. Later in the Georgian period more detail appeared. Stone work to provide a grander entrance with classical pillars, pediments, hoods and porches.
Victorian houses tended to have narrow hallways and entrances. The front door was often made of softwood and painted, stained or grained to look like hardwood. The doors would have been panelled, divided into four or six sections with some panels filled with glass. A beautiful front door would have been very important to the Victorian home owner so it would have been well maintained with gleaming brass furniture.

The metal wall performances combining beauty with functionIf you are someone who lives in one of the smaller houses or apartments in the city, then you should know one of the cardinal rule: Each space must be given for a purpose. Almost everything will double in something.
Here is an example classic. In a small house, a bed frame can not only be something that holds onto the bed. To maximize space, some furniture manufacturers have found bright the means to convert the space under the bed in the drawers where you can keep your shoes, toys or bedding away while you are not using them.
