I recently purchased a dark wooden patio set, and unsure of how to maintain it. The wood was treated with linseed oil, now do I remove the linseed oil and and seal it with a product, or do I just leave it? I am not too sure if we'll be able to put the patio furniture away in the winter, so it might be stuck outside all winter! Also, i don't want the sun to strip to much of my colour, can anyone help? Just wanted to add, the furniture is not teak :( I wish I could afford that!

Dont remove the inseed oil! It will protect your setting from weather! Just re-oil it every season, it will bring the colour out and look like new each year. cheers :)

Am feeling in the sunshine mood with the upcoming forecast! We are finally buying a patio furniture table and chair set!

What would you go for in terms of the product lasting - is wooden best - or does they tend to need a lot of maintenance and need covering or they will go mouldy? Or is the metal type ones better - or do they just rust?

What do you think - any experience or ideas much appreciated! Not got a lot to spend - £200 - £250 max for 6 chair one!

I went with metal, my set is 10 yrs old now & still like new. No glass top to worry about breaking by hail etc. It has replaceable plastic feet on the bottom, no rust stains on my patio at all. The chairs are 360 degree swivel. so easy to exit or get into to. They also have springs under the seat for rocking. The set is quite common here, & the chairs are more money for this style, I bought 2 chairs one year, 2 the next year. Outdoors year round, still no signs of rust. Easy to wash also if a bird should happen to leave droppings.

Which do you prefer? This would be for a dining set in cast aluminum that looks like wrought iron and would be used on a wooden deck (not a patio). I like the look of dining chairs (i.e., with legs) because I prefer a traditional style with my old house, but I'm wondering if swivel chairs would be more comfortable and practical on a deck (no legs to get caught in the cracks). Opinions?
One more thing -- swivel chairs cost about twice as much as dining chairs.

I agree with the person who suggested a mix of the 2 kinds of chairs if you have a table large enough for 6 chairs. If you are just getting four chairs, having them all the same will probably look better. Swivel chairs can be very comfortable for just sitting, but I always feel like I have to lean forward uncomfortably to eat at the table because they tend to tilt back slightly. So it really depends, are you planning on using the set mostly for sitting at the table and eating, or for sitting and relaxing? I've never had a problem with the legs on non-swivel chairs getting caught in the deck cracks--but it is something to consider if the cracks on your deck are wider, or the legs are particularly small. Hope you enjoy your deck this summer!

has anybody bought the wooden folding garden patio funiture and then had a problem assembling the table??

do the legs go on the inside or the outside of the batons under the table?? there are instructions...but they seem to make no sense! it says use the 4 screws...but it appears that only 2 are needed.

any answers appreciated as hubby has been out in the garden for ages & his patience is wearing thin....thank you.

I desparately need advice on how to treat a sun deck and my wooden garage doors and patio furniture which is exposed to the elements. The front door was merely varnished when it was installed and now, 5 months later, the varnish has become brittle and is flaking. It has also faded and has 'burnt' to an opaque white colour. Obviously, this has to be removed thoroughly. I was told to put 4 coats of varnish thinned with turps at the ratio of 75:25%. This should dry thoroughly between coats. Only thereafter do I apply two coats of varnish. This was not done initially. I am not certain whether this really works and obviously I don't want to spend more time and money on this task if it is not the correct treatment.

PLEASE, is there some kind person who can tell me what the real proper treatment is. I know there must be a way. After all, how do people protect their yachts and sundecks at the sea?
