Decorating question?

My house has diagnal lumber panels (dark wood), through out the entire living area's (open space, 3 rooms), including the large, wide stair case, which has squared off timber for the railings. The fire place is brick and then white wall directly above, framed in same dark wood. The entire house has a "cabin look." The dining room has a slighly lighter wood, but still very dark. I am ready to lighten things up with accessories to this darkness but not sure what looks right. The occassional small wall area needs to be painted or wall papered...how should I decorate? What colors work best? Ceiling is white too, and there are large windows everywhere, some floor to ceiling, others are patio doors (three sets). Your creative, practical thoughts are appreciated!

Go for furniture, buy light colors, like beige's, light blues and reds. But with wood furniture, keep it that same dark color, you don't want a mixture of wood colors. You could also try vases and flowers, fake or real. Just light shades. Keep your windows free of shades or use translucent colors. Anything see-through. Good Luck.

Opinions needed PLEASE!!!?

Hi!! We are buying a new house and I just cant come up with the right color combo- im constantly rethinking things. here is my latest idea- can you imagine it? what do you think? any other suggestions? thanks!

the house is bi-level. top floor roughly 1000 sq ft. you go up the stairs right as you walk in. to the left is the living room with a guard rail, a small bay window on the south wall, an old fashioned brick fireplace against the east wall. to the west are another set of stairs goin down, and up the stairs is a rail, then wall. to the north is connected dining room with sliding glass doors to the deck. to the west of the dining room is the kitchen with a breakfast bar. adjacent to the living room is the hallway which leads to 3 bedrooms and a bath.

ok so now that you have an idea of the layout this is what i was thinking.... the wall which the red fireplace is on (which also is part of the dining room's wall) i would paint a deep, warm almond color to help contrast with the fireplace. the wall of the bay window (which is also the wall the entryway door sits) i would paint a cherry-brown color. this color would wrap around to the door, then around to the west walls up to the hallway. the hallway would be the same almond color. as well as the wall the sliding doors are on and the kitchen. dining room/kitchen flooring would be a medium earthy brown stone like vinyl tile. cabinets and breakfast bar stand would be a rich cherry expresso color. countertops black granite laminate same for breakfast bar. appliances are white, but eventually upgraded to stainless steel. drapes on bay window light tan. drapes on patio doors maybe chocolate brown.... railings black... flooring a dark rich brown wood..... baseboards along the floor white as well as bay window trimming and fireplace mantle. ceilings off white.

Grats on the new house!

I had a bi-level also. Great houses. You have made some excellent color choices here. My only concern would be the cherry-brown and the earthy brown not being at home with each other especially adding the cherry-expresso to the mix then black granite to boot. Tan on the bay window and chocolate on the sliders it all sounds like your trying to hard.

Let's take a step back..Honestly the 3 rooms need to blend. They are interconnected. You need to incorporate the red from the fireplace as it will be a focal point. You want to bring in browns and tans. Honestly on the fireplace wall I would do wallpaper.

Alternativly a paint technique. http://www.ralphlaurenhome.com/rlhome/pr oducts/paint/items.asp?haid=75
So many thing you can do to pull the colors together..I would go with a brown granite in the Kitchen and keep the Almond as a base.

almond or earthy brown would be nice on the fireplace, just don't overdo all those dark shade brown colors as it may make the whole place dark.

try throwing combination of colors to other rooms like royal blue and yellow or blue and green besides your common areas.

hope this helps! =)
