Why does my co-worker slide stuff around on my desk with a outdoor-patio-table umbrella?

I work in Southern California (San Diego) and right next to my desk is a giant patio. My co-worker went on the patio, brought in the giant crank-umbrella used for the table, and started to gently slide my personal effects around on my desk.

He also very gently brushed by my ear which induced an itch.

What should I do?


Be polite and professional but ask this said "co-worker" to please put the patio umbrella back outside as it is "annoying" you and has no place in the office. If this does not work, then report him to an office manager.
I hate to admit it, but this is one of the "worst" and "most obtrusive" cases of office equipment abuse I've ever heard of!!!

Can your glass patio table break if you leave the umbrella in the open position and there is a lot of wind?

We came home today to find our patio table shattered in pieces and the umbrella off to the side. We always leave the umbrella in the up position. Could the wind have forced the umbrella out so hard it broke the table? We were suspicious that someone may have deliberately broke it on us.


Yes it can. If it's very windy the umbrella can list straight up and out of the table. It could also cause pressure on the glass to make it shatter as this is safety glass. Best thing to do is keep it down until you need it. And better still, on a real windy day remove it and store it out of the wind.
