the wagon wheel is an original full size wheel which supports the back of bench. Need to fill in a few bits with wood filler as well as clean, oil etc What products / procedures do we need

I don't know what you mean by "fill in a few bits." Are these little nail holes etc or pieces of missing wood?

In any case, after dealing with the "bits", sand and apply several coats of boiled linseed oil (follow directions on can).

I have a garden bench that I have had for 2 or 3 seasons. I believe that I used some sort of tongue oil on it initially. What type of weather protectant is best for this?? (I am cleaning and sanding it...)
Can I use something that is used to protect wooden decks?

I really like linseed oil - goggle both linseed and tongue oil - the commercial water repellent crap has never worked for more than one season, but they sure get more press.

I'm working on a teak bench for my mom. It's her project for me. :s

It was originally grey and filthy. I used denatured alcohol and steel wool she bought to clean it first but the wool was breaking off in the grain. I then used a brass bristle brush to get the rest off til I could see the natural golden color. It seemed to be taking forever and so I tried a steel wire brush which worked great.

However, I read the wood should be smooth and after using the wire brushes, the grain is very raised. So I used a sander to get it smooth but I the heat from the sanding seemed to bring out the oil in the wood and turned blackish to light green.

I tried wet sanding to eliminate the heat but I couldn't tell any difference. When dry it's very light grey to grey green and not the golden color.

What's the correct way to restore teak wood? Did I have it right the first time with grain raised?

In my opinion, teak is the finest of all furniture woods because it does not need varnish or urethane to finish it. If you have an older piece, treasure it because most of the old teak forests are now gone and there is very little really great teak furniture on the market. (Most is very thin veneer with a much more "open" grain.)

Natural teak is actually grey; it is the multiple applications of teak oil, painstakingly rubbed in along the grain of the wood, then buffed off with a circular motion that gives it the wonderful warm color we associate with teak.

Next time use nothing but damp cloths with a little dish detergent in the water to clean a neglected teak bench or table. Because the teak is originally protected with oil, the grime comes off as the dish detergent binds with the oil. You can use ultra ultra ultra fine wet'n'dry sandpaper to remove light scratches; leave deeper ones to contribute to the "character" of the piece.

Once the grime is removed, rub in a layer of high quality teak oil (not cheap boiled linseed or "swedish oil"). Leave the oil on for only a few minutes before buffing. On a badly dried out piece you may need to apply as many as five coats to restore its original luster.

6ft teak garden bench which has already been treated by the manufacturer? What should I look for when buying one and any further advice would be welcome, thanks.

depends where you live and where you will be shopping. there are loads of garden furniture sales on at the moment and i would shop around as there are loads of bargains to be had even tesco and asda have garden sales up to 50% off.
look for wood quality and if there are any knots in the wood make sure they are not "weeping" as it means they need treating. good luck and enjoy the sun now we finally have some!
