I have read wax, linseed oil, and standard Pledge will all do the job, but this is really expensive stuff that was bought at an estate sale, and nobody can seem to answer the best (and definitive) way on how to care for solid beech furniture. Thanks for your help!!!

dont use commercial sprays such as pledge, endust, etc.
personally i wouldn't put any kind of a varnish or poly finish on the furniture, but others have with good success, however my personal choices would be a good quality beeswax furniture polish and that will give you a beautiful handrubbed glow as well as protecting the wood.
you can also use tung oil which is handrubbed into the wood and will give good protection as well.
both these methods were suggested to me by reputable furniture restoration people.
it sounds beautiful, protect it properly and you will enjoy it for years to come.
i always measure the tops of fine furniture and have glass cut and bevilled to fit the piece, thus eliminating the concerns of water rings, scratches, etc.

I am moving and have a table with 4 chairs and a king matress and box spring to get rid of. I have tried to sell it, give it away, and don't want to pay to have a dump truck come pick it up. Is there a donation center that accepts these items? What are my options?

You could give them away through Freecycle.com

Or, you could donate them to the Salvation Army or Purple Heart. Most charities will pick up larger items at your home.

Sturdy Birch Wood Construction

I am looking for sturdy and safe desks or table-chair sets for my 2 year old daughter. The wooden ones which I like are very costly (more than $100). The plastic ones are either not very good or again costly. Do you know any stores where I can buy good stuff? I really like what I see in the kids section in public libraries. The colorful wooden tables and chairs with pictures of characters. Are they ever on sale? Is there any place I can check that? Thanks for any suggestions.

See if any of your local schools ever sell the old wooden sets. They are really the most sturdy and suitable.

A friend has recently gave me a dinning room table and four chairs, but they stink like cigarette smoke. What can I do to get rid of the smell?

I had the same problem with a chair. I put it out in the sun and sprayed it with Lysol spray (used the Fresh Scent one) then left it in the sun all day and left it outside that night. The next day, I couldn't smell any smoke at all so I brought it inside and still don't smell anything on it. Sunlight is great for killing smells.
