Hi All,

I am thinking of laying a small patio in an area just to have a bbq on. The dimensions are about 1.8m x 0.9m. I have a couple of questions and im hoping that someone will be able to help me.

I plan on cementing the slabs onto the ground and so far i have dug about 2inches into the ground.

My first question is can i lay wet cement/sand mix onto this area and then lay the slabs on top of it, or do i need to do a base first, then let it set, then lay another layer of cement/sand ontop of the base.

My second question is what type of sand should i use, do i need to use ballast or builders sand.

And lastly, what ratio of cement/sand should i use?

I will be laying patio slabs if that helps.

When you say lay the slabs on top, do you mean when the cement is completely dry and laying a bit of sand on it then the slabs, or do you mean waiting until its nearly set and laying the slabs straight on top of it.?

the way i usually do it, and it works pretty well, is bye digging about 3 inches into the ground, level the whole way, then stomped or beat the level plain to make it more stable and firm. after that, we added dry mortar mix to the ground, not too thick, to help when leveling the slabs, or bricks in our case. then we packed every brick nice and neat, no holes in between each brick at all. worked out great but an even better idea is to have a bricker or stone mason to just lay the ground for you, i believe thats better because it looks more stylish and lasts a lonnnnnnnng time. and the ratio of cement to sand in normal brick houses is 20 FULL shovelfuls per bag of cement or 3:1 sand to cement ratio. if your going to make an error, its better to have more cement than needed instead of vice versa

Most seem to not have the size your after, you may have to have it hand made from wood

This is an old album 70's or 80's.I can't find the name of this artis.He is on the album cover.He is underwater in a pool,long hair and sunglasses.He is looking at you.There is a small patio set (table and a chair) and food and stuff floating behind him.Can you help me find the name.

A bistro set is a great start. You can also buy outdoor rugs in a variety of sizes (Google outdoor rug) and if your patio isn't large it shouldn't be very expensive to cover the floor. Install some ceiling hooks and hang some ferns (about $8 each at Lowe's) or if it is a balcony, a hanging windowbox (e.g. http://www.suzyrenovator.com/wp-content/ uploads/embossed-copper-planter-plow-hea rth.jpg). Finally, if there is a plug try some golden Christmas lights or paper lantern(s), and if there isn't tealights in holders or some candles will do wonders. Hope this helps!
