I've recently purchased an old wrought iron patio set and would like to restore it to a new-looking black finish.

First, you will need to remove the old finish plus all of the rust that is on there. You need a bare metal to start a good finish with.

You can go to Sears and buy a sand blaster for about $75 or rent one for about $7 a day . Add sand to it and blast off the old finish and rust too. I took an old bench I had to a fabrication shop here locally and they sand blasted it clean for me for $15. Shops that weld and do "ironwork" also do sand blasting.

Once clean, its ready to start finishing it. The best finish around is that on Automobiles. No question about it, its the best and most durable and costs are very reasonable for such a finish.

So buy a quart of Automotive primer. Spray the set with a coat or two using an ordinary spray gun.

Then apply the base coat color. Here you have a big choice of colors, but you say black, so spray it with base coat black.

Then spray on the clear coat Polyurethane with a bit of hardener in it. Give it two coats of this finish.

You will have the best set around and it will last for at least 20 years out in the sun, rain, snow, anywhere. The total cost of this is about the same as going to Lowes and buying some kind of a paint that will surely not stay on there because it is not resistant to the sun, rain, and weather like an auto paint is.

I need a paint that will hold up to chipping and fading in a wet climate for an outdoor aluminum patio table. I want it to match some chairs that were purchased from a different set.

Is there some kind of product you can put on your patio set cushions to stop the sun from ruining the color on them? I'm dying for a simple fix (ie Scotchgard for spills). Thanks for any help.

I think we are all waiting for a product such as you describe but for now I think your choices are to cover them or move them inside when they aren't in use. When even the toughest and most durable finishes such as acrylics and urethane's fade after being in prolonged sun, your fabric colors don't stand much of a chance.

I am looking for a really nice quality patio set that will last me for many years. What is more durable, steel or cast aluminum?

Cast Aluminum patio furniture will outlast steel in all enviroments. It is a "zero maintenance" product, which should never need re-painting or replacing.
It is, however, advisable to spend to your maximum budget....there are different grades of quality out there....as with anything you purchase, make the judgement call as to whether the $99.99 set of 2 chairs and a table are as good as the set where the table alone is $99 and each chair is $150....there is a price difference for a reason....after all, a Kia and a Mercedes are both "just cars", but the quality justifies the difference in cost.
A solid cast aluminum set (as opposed to a "tube" style) is able to be left out of doors 12 months a year, so if you live in an area with climactic extremes, it would be your best choice....if you are in a location with minor fluctuations, and are not intending to treat the pieces roughly, a "tube" style aluminum set may do....however, for the longest lifespan, stay away from sling style chairs, as the fabric will deteriorate long before the frames give out..

I purchased a patio set from Chase Pitkin before it closed and now I need the name of the brand to fix a broken item. The table is black aluminum with a greenish tinted glass table top. The chairs are also black aluminum slingback with green meshlike seats/seat back. It also has a black umbrella stand with green umbrella. This set also came in blue. Please help!

First of all it sounds ugly as all hell, Chase Pitkin was like a glorified K-mart that is why we went out of business, everything there was from Korea (cheap merchandise over priced). Go to Bed Bath and Beyond, Neimann- Marcus or Macy's even. The brand of the set is either Problemasticate or Childrenofthecornicus.
