we have a concrete covered patio in the backyard, and my husband wants to do some kind of cool stone out there. Do we have to get rid of the concrete first? or is there a way to just lay the stone on top of it? We're doing our research since he will be doing this himself.
maybe something like this http://www.gardendesignco.com/i/dp/stone _patio_garden_lighting.jpg

Lowe#39;s expert, Mike Kraft, shows viewers how to install low voltage and solar outdoor landscape lighting. Learn how to illuminate your garden ...
I've had two answers from electricians - one says armoured cable and the other says conduit.
Obviously we want to be safe and legal. The wires will run round the back of a patio & up walls etc.
Thanks for your help.
***NOTE*** The regulations are very different for the U.S. vs the U.K. The below is for the U.S., per the National Electrical Code
You've got a couple options-
-UF Cable -- "romex" rated for direct burial - must be buried at least 24" deep
-Non-metallic Conduit - looks like grey sprinkler pipe - 18" deep
-Water-tight flex conduit - 18" deep
-Rigid Metal Conduit - heavy walled metal conduit (not EMT) - 6" deep
-Low-voltage Cable - looks like heavy lamp cord - 6" deep
For garden lighting, I'd strongly recommend a low-voltage system. If you've got an outdoor outlet, low-voltage is an easy DIY project. If no convenient outlet, you might want to get an electrician to mount a junction box in a convenient location for the transformer and timer.
note: if you decide to run conduit (and it might make sense at least to the edge of the patio, to supply an outlet and possibly 120v overhead lights), do NOT run NM cable ("romex") thru the conduit. While it's not specifically prohibited by the National Electrical Code, it's not standard practice, and it would be a huge pain in the *** to try to pull romex through a long run of conduit.
Light turns on automatically when dark, Super bright LED for brighter light output
Batteries are rechargeable and should last for approximately 2 years before replacing, Ideal for areas where conventional electrial supply is not available
1 ultra bright white LED bulbs in each Dragonfly, LED bulbs flash continuously in a set pattern
I've started a small vegetable garden on my back patio- I want to grow tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, onions, zucchini, and various herbs. I've noticed that the patio only gets about four hours of direct sunlight daily, and I'm worried that this will not be enough for heathly growth and yields. These plants are all in containers, so they are able to be moved if necessary to maximize light exposure. But, I was wondering if I fit my patio light with a couple flourescent bulbs, will this help make up for the lack of direct light? Will the plants be healthier with a couple of extra hours of supplemental light from the flourescents, or will the sunlight be enough?
If you can move them so that they get at least 6 hours of sun a day, that would be enough. If you can't, then supplemental fluorescent lighting will help. Keep in mind that you don't want them on all night long, and that yields will be less from container-grown plants, anyway.

Patio Lighting – Give Your Backyard A New Feel | The Garden Lights ...
You’ve probably seen how outdoor patio lighting is being used by home owners for enhancing the look and feel of their backyards. Building or owning a house is a dream come true for most of people and they like to make use of different combinations of ornaments and lights in their backyards. There are two main aspects of using these garden lights in your backyard. The spaciousness and ambiance created by these lights can be quite important.
You have to be extra careful while designing terrace and backyard areas, as the positioning of patio lights as well as umbrellas can have an impact on how they look together. If you are positioning the lights around your patio and backyard carefully, you can create a stylish and spacious look for your backyard. The focus should be creating the right combination – so that you can strike a balance between the space available and number of lights to be installed. You should also try not to make the area look too bright or too dim and find a balance between the two extremes. If your backyard has a patio umbrella in it, you can also look for patio umbrella lights as the lights from within the umbrella will give a spacious look to the patio, while providing comfort and ambiance.
...Is A Gas Fire Pit A Good Idea? | The Garden Lights Guru
When you have decided that your patio or yard would really benefit from an outdoor fire pit , your next decision is whether you need a gas fire pit or stick with a traditional wood fueled fire pit. There is no doubt that a traditional wood fire pit will provide heat on a cool evening and lots of ambiance, in some cases there is nothing to beat the smells associated with a smokey wood fire, but there is also a lot of work to be in preparation and cleaning up afterward. A gas fire pit requires no preparation especially if you have natural gas, and there is no cleaning up afterward.
There are two types of gas that can used for fire pits – natural gas and propane. The natural gas can be plumbed in, but is generally more expensive that propane. Propane can also be used for portable fire pits. Propane is heavier than natural gas and can take slightly longer to light. Both types require burners placed in the fire pit. The size of the burner will depend upon the size of the fire pit.
