We are thinking of getting new deck furniture, and I love the comfort of the ones where the chairs have thick padded pillows for the seats and the back. Do the pillows have to be brought inside when it rains? I am concerned about mold developing in them if I leave them outside. What's your experience with them?

Out door furniture is able to be left out for the summer season, however, should be taken in at the onset of autumn.

The cushions are fabricated to withstand some dampness, but should be popped into a covered area if rain is comming. Shed or just inside your door. They must be taken in for the winter.

Yes, they will develop mildew. I am dealing with this now.

I have very expensive furniture that Im using on outside deck and I have noticed rat droppings on and around couches, how do I disinfect them? wash them with what ??

Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle saturate the furniture with it, then let it dry.

we have wicker furniture in our sun room but are moving to a new place with a covered deck, would it be okay to leave our furniture on the deck? we live in ohio.

In order to protect it, spray it with 2 coats of non-yellowing polyurethane. You may also want to spray it with DampRId Mold and Mildew Remover and Protector at the end of each season. I have had mildew and mold problems on wicker that was kept outside in both the Cleveland winters and the rainy Cincy season. The DampRid provides a great barrier and will keep it from growing. To be on the extra safe side, I would order some furniture covers from someplace like Home Decorators or check at the Depot and Lowes before summer's end. I have all weather wicker and still cover it every winter though I'm living in SoCal now.

I'm moving some wicker furniture from inside to my deck. There are some slip-covered cushions as part of the pieces, but i don't think the fabric is very weather resistant. Can i treat the fabric somehow to handle rain, sun, etc or should i just have new cushion covers made?

You have two choices. You can use a scotchguard product that comes as a spray on application available at Target, Wal-Mart and camping stores, like REI. I've had limited success with these products because they do not resist mildew.

The second choice is to use a water-proofer in the washing machine. Since the cushions are slip covered, you can remove the fabric from the cushion material. Spray the cusion material with the scotchguard. Put the fabric covers in the washing machine on the soak cycle and put the water-proofing solution in the water according to the directions on the bottle. (you'll find it marketed under several brand names in the laundry aisle at Wal-Mart and also at camping stores where it is used to waterproof sleeping bags, tennis shoes, etc.) Soak overnight and then spin load without allowing the machine to go through either the wash or rinse cycles. The product is heat set, so run the covers in the dryer at the lowest setting to avoid shrinkage.

If you do decide to have new covers made, Sunbrella makes the best fabric I've ever seen hold up to sun, doesn't fade or mildew, won't stain, can be wiped off with a damp sponge and is almost indestructible. It also has the best choice of fabrics, both patterns and solids, I could find. They don't just have that ugly circus stripe in green, yellow and blue...

I kept noticing a small finch or sparrow (?) outside on my deck furniture. I didn't think anything of it until my boyfriend saw it fly out of a canvas lawn chair that's folded up against the wall. When he looked inside he discovered a bird's nest with two living babies in it. We're fine with letting them be, but we're moving upstairs to a different apt. soon. I'ts in our lawnchair so we can't leave it- what should we do?

leave the chair there until the birds leave the nest..it should not be too long...they usually leave when they are about 2 weeks old. Put a note or some flagging or something...so your new neighbors know or just tell them about the nest. It is actully illegal for you to move the nest if it is a native species, as all native birds are protected by law..so if your neighbors have a problem with the chair..tell them you would be breaking the law by moving it.
