We need a new dining table and chairs for the garden. We can't afford teak but there appears to be a wide selection of products in either acacia wood or eucalyptus wood. Which of these two woods is the best choice and why? Of course if anyone knows a place to buy low cost teak furniture then please let us know. Thanks

I'm just a poor good ole boy, but if you can afford to buy any wood furniture for outside, especially a dining table and chairs, I'd say you could afford the teak.

I am looking for the most durable/ longest lasting wood for making outdoor chairs. My choices are between White and Red Oak, Ash, Fir, Eucalyptus, Teak and Pine. What is the best to worst?

Teak is prized for its beauty and durability. However, because of the demand and over-harvesting it is becoming more expensive and less available. All the woods will require some maintenance to prolong the life of the furniture but the hard woods would be preferred.

My neighbor came to me asking for help in fixing her outdoor teak furniture. The arm has come off and split the opening/joint. I personally don't know how to do it and what tools would she need to fix. Any suggestions please. She said that her furniture is only a month old...can this be fixed?

Your description is sort of vague, so I will give my best guess at what your need to do. If it is a flat piece that split along the grain of the wood, glue it back together, using "wood glue". You can get wood glue and the clamps you need from any hardware store.

Apply a liberal amount of glue to both sides of the split, stick the split together and place the clamp over it and tighten the clamp. The clamp should be tight enough to squeeze most of the glue out of the split.

Use a damp sponge and wash excess glue off of the wood. Let the glued split sit for 24 hrs, remove from the clamp and sand lightly and refinish.

If it is a joint that has separated, glue it back together also. If the joint is a round end that fits into a hole, split the round end and insert a thin wedge into the split, just enough to stay in position, the wedge should be 1/2 as long as the depth of the hole. Apply glue to the hole and the round end. Force the round end into the hole and let dry. The small wedge will force itself into the split as the round end is inserted into the hole. It forces the side of the round end and the sides of the hole together and bonds them.

Sounds as if the lumber was not dried before it was made into furniture. As lumber drys, it warps and splits. Once it is through drying the best pieces are picked for use in making furniture.

i recently bought a beech coloured hard wood set of patio furniture...it was expensive but i bought it as i liked the colour of the wood.

my husband (when i was out) treated it with 'teak oil'..and it has completely changed the colour...and i now hate it...so as you can imagine..we exchanged a few words!

my husband said it is the correct treatment for the wood...and it has to be treated. anybody know if this is true... are you supposed to coat outdoor wood in teak oil?? thank you for any serious answers.

p.s. he told me to ask on Yahoo...to prove he is right!!

As a member of his gender, I am sorry to say he is WRONG!
TEAK oil is a darker colour than beech wood, hence it will obviously darken the colour of "beech coloured hardwood".
To best retain the appearance of light coloured woods, I recommend a clear water-based exterior varnish. There are many brands on the market these days, your local hardware store will advise. Oils are good for wood, but they generally darken the colour initially, with the added disadvantage of not sealing the wood from staining by just about anything else. Try washing it off with caustic soda and bleaching it to get the original colour back. (Well, let him do it to retrieve the relationship. hehehe)
