hard wood garden furniture...treatment??
Outdoor restaurant

i recently bought a beech coloured hard wood set of patio furniture...it was expensive but i bought it as i liked the colour of the wood.

my husband (when i was out) treated it with 'teak oil'..and it has completely changed the colour...and i now hate it...so as you can imagine..we exchanged a few words!

my husband said it is the correct treatment for the wood...and it has to be treated. anybody know if this is true... are you supposed to coat outdoor wood in teak oil?? thank you for any serious answers.

p.s. he told me to ask on Yahoo...to prove he is right!!

As a member of his gender, I am sorry to say he is WRONG!
TEAK oil is a darker colour than beech wood, hence it will obviously darken the colour of "beech coloured hardwood".
To best retain the appearance of light coloured woods, I recommend a clear water-based exterior varnish. There are many brands on the market these days, your local hardware store will advise. Oils are good for wood, but they generally darken the colour initially, with the added disadvantage of not sealing the wood from staining by just about anything else. Try washing it off with caustic soda and bleaching it to get the original colour back. (Well, let him do it to retrieve the relationship. hehehe)

You'd most likely be dealing w/ customer complaints and/or questions. Taking calls, answering questions, troubleshooting assembly issues possibly. Just my thoughts.

Is it impolite to ask elderly relatives to walk to the back of our yard to smoke?
Outdoor restaurant

I am a non-smoker & I find the smell completely offensive. I am also a mother with a toddler & am pregnant again so I am always careful to ensure that my daughter & unborn child are not exposed to 2nd & 3rd hand smoke.

Anyway, we are having some of my hubby's relatives over for lunch this weekend & some of his older relatives are smokers who are used to lighting up in their own homes. My mother in law has told me that they won't want to go outside to smoke so I should let them smoke in the laundry. I am not prepared to compromise the health of my children so they can smoke & I would like to set up some of our outdoor furniture at the back of our garden so they can be comfortable but well away from the house. My husband has suggested a compromise...he thinks we should let them smoke on our patio but as it is summer here the door is always open to allow for air flow so the smoke will drift in anyway.

I don't want to compromise but my husband says I am being rude & accusing me of only being stubborn because it is his family & not mine...am I being to rigid & is it rude to ask them to respect me in my own home?????
I forgot to mention the other part of the issue...I don't want them to cuddle my toddler if they are wearing the same clothing that they were smoking in...the smell clings to clothing & hair...he thinks I am being rediculous but I have read the new studies about 2nd & 3rd hand smoke & it terrifies me!
Thanks for the answers...I was interested to see a lot of people commenting that I should compromise but ot as many seemed to suggest that these older relatives should make any sort of concession for the fact that there are 2 sets of young lungs in the house.

Oh, & to the person who said that 2nd & 3rd hand smoke isn't an issue unless you are in the room with a smoker, do some research before you answer a question because you just come off looking like a twat when you are wrong!!!!!

I have decided that as I am ultimately responsible for the child I am carrying (while BOTH hubby & I are responsible for our child) then I am going to disregard his opinion. They can bugger off down the back to smoke. I have called them & told them that these are the rules & if they don't like it they can stay at their own home & not bother coming to visit! So far they have all been fine except for my MIL who can go jump as far as I am concerned!

Of course being pregnant you want to safeguard your baby's and childrens' health - that is only natural. You must remember young people are more educated re smoking and the dangers etc, but elderly people I have nursed told me when they smoked, it was like breathing air - no-one thinks anything of it. They can't change their habits I suppose. It's not unreasonable to ask them to go outside and close the door. I think your hubby should be more concerned about his kids' health though. As a nurse who's been with people who've died from the effects of smoking, this issue of 2nd and 3rd hand smoke is very serious, but how to tell elderly people that? You could just tell them straight (they'll probably get offended though), or bring it up in conversation. I think it will be too hard not to let them hug and kiss the other kids, as elderly people love kids, and I don't think it will do too much harm for one night. But yes smokers' clothes and breath etc DO stink and it's horrid trying to get the smell our of ur furniture. Ur probably more sensitive cos u don't smoke. I have never smoked though some of my ex's used to and I'd make them smoke outside, or brush their teeth b4 going to bed, etc. Maybe just let it go for one night and just ask everyone politely to smoke outside, with the door closed, or partially closed. U can't change old people - they're stubborn as anything! - and it will probably create an argument and bad feeling. Calmly tell ur hubby what you feel, but if it was my house, they'd be outside smoking, end of argument. Good luk with the bubby and great to hear people are so concerned re their families health.

Help with Dad Christmas gift - VERY hard to buy for - PLEASE HELP!!!!!!?
Patio of a villa

Good looking, 55 yr. old VP of construction firm.

He has everything he needs or wants!

He drinks beer (only) and smokes cigars but only a certain kind (gift baskets with various types are not an option - I've tried).
He restored a car, but it's perfected and nothing I could know is needed. ('57 Bel Aire)
He works with tools but owns every type - probably more than one, he's already told me that.
He wears cologne, but can't smell!
He's a freemason, but I've exhausted all gifts that relate
He golfs, but has brand new clubs, bag, shoes, magazine subscr. He already stocks up on golf balls and tees.
He has a brand new computer, and doesn't care for any other tech-related items.
He buys new clothes all the time and hates my taste (he's a bit, um, unstylish)
He's fun - but have jokingly bought him nerf guns, portable videogames and remote control cars in the past.
No hunting or fishing or bowling.
He loves food - but a "meat and potatoes" type of guy - one that already has Omaha steaks deliver all the time.
No sweet tooth.
Will not watch a movie twice, nor tv shows.
He gets gift cards from clients all the time.
No ties.
Renovating the house - well, hired help is
He gardens, but barely. Tomatoes and squash only, I think.
Likes jewelry, but his taste is not affordable.
Doesn't care for sports - goes to some NFL games, but not a true "fan"
New wallet. His type of watches wouldn't suit my budget.
He already has a stack of books he claims to be "getting a start on"
Mom deals with decor. Nothing like that would be of interest.
No work gear and he has a company car. GPS, cell phone and accessories are redundant.
Travels so much for work, he doesn't care to go for pleasure. Travel items - luggage, travel pillows, etc. would never be used.
He's practical.
We have a huge inground pool. Mom buys the fun stuff, and other people come to clean.
We have a game room - likes billards and darts - new balls, cues, chalk-holder even. Table was recently recovered and whole dartboard set-up is new.
Has an outdoor firepit - had two, gave me one- He already have me his old patio furniture that was from this summer, he didn't like it.
He has all the music he cares for, I've tried to buy him some and he either already had it or didn't care b /c he has satellite radio.
Would not be caught dead at a concert.
Does his own lawn, oddly enough. He has all the needs, like mower, leaf blower, weed eater, pesticides...

ANY other ideas? In reality he's fun but honestly has all the necessities. Therefore, I need a unique gift that isn't generic - but must be practical too. He's not a fan of "gifting for the sake of gifting." Also, not religious.
I think all of you have given me some great ideas! Not sure which I'll pick, but I'll def check out some of the websites you all recommended. He loves nice wallets, and his are always getting worn out. As for the classic car stuff, I just have no idea where to begin - he's not the type for "novelty" items like keychains and such, but maybe I could get out of him if he'd like a new gear stick or seat covers - his car is bad-a and I get it eventually!
The utopia beer from Sam Adams is a great idea (I worked at a liquor store all through college and we had the really neat looking metal bottle) for the connoisseur, but my dad likes bud and bud only...

Anyways, thanks for all the ideas - you have helped immensely!

Still, any other novel ideas are still welcome !!!

So he has a fully restored 57 Chevy. You don't put in that kind or time or money into an old car unless you like old cars. There are a lot of places online that sell parts for old cars. They also sell other really neat stuff that relate to old cars. Shirts, hats, keychains, jewelery, lighters, chairs, clocks.....literally anything you can think of. Try them, you might find something there.
