I am wanting to build an outdoor bench, what is the best type of wood I should use? And at bunnings do they cut wood to you measuments?
I'm in Australia.

For those who don't know Bunnings is a Bloody big hardware store similar to Mitre 10 or any other of your southern hardware store that is if your an Aussie. In Darwin Bunnings i know they used to In Townsville they didn't but.... If you go to Bunnings in the garden section you will find they have benches in flat pack which you put together yourself. I know Cairns Bunnings has the benches to diy. as to making it yourself flat packs are cheaper. By flatpack i mean they are ready to assemble and come in a box.Some cut 4 u but charge like a wounded bull.

i to buy some metal tubing for an outdoor bench im currently making but im not sure what type of metal sqecifically i should use. any suggestions would be great, it needs to be rust proof and corrosion resistant im also on a budget and live in the UK if you have any suggestions.
ive just looked at some alluminium tubing and there seems to be to thicknesses 16 swg and 10 swg. 10 swg is thicker but would the 16 swg still be strong enough as it is cheaper.

Aluminum or galvanized steel.The steel will be stronger but heavier.And it will be cheaper than aluminum.

The bench was painted with dark brown paint. The paint flaked off from the yellow cedar, but stuck to the pine. Now I removed the paint from the visible parts as good as I could.On the the underside and the back I will leave the old paint. Which product will adhere well to the yellow cedar and the pine? I would prefer a darker color because for the legs and support- 2x4s scrap wood has been used which is of different shades.I want to be sure that no cloths will be stained when sitting on the bench.

You have two options 1st you can prime it all then apply any paint or 2nd if you use a high quality paint (top shelf) it will be self priming and also coverage will be much better along with increased durability. I would recommend Duration exterior coatings available at Sherwin Williams for about $40 a gallon. I know this is a little pricey but remember paint is cheaper than labor.Since you have different woods I don't think staining would turn out to good because of the different colors of your base woods (ceder & pine) It would be hard to obtain an even color without the repairs being obvious.

The picnic table set was left outside too long in bad weather. The top needs sanding before restaining and varnishing, but the benches are in pretty good shape. Can I just revarnish over the old varnish?

Yes but I suggest you give it a light sanding first, then wipe it down with white spirit before you apply fresh varnish.

No back, just a bench to sit on. The seat is part of a recycled futon frame and a cushion. It just needs legs.
I tried stacking block columns, but they're not the right size, and the seat rocks and isn't steady. I need to attach seat to base.

you will need to build a frame with 2x4 s, measure the seat, this is the size your fram will be,screw 4 2x4 s togather to form a rectangle, then add 4 legs (how ever tall you want it to be) then add a2x2 brace in between each leg ( half way between seat & floor) paint it or stain & you can sit & rest
