What would be the best wood to use that's suitable for lots of rain, hot weather, bugs? we have various stories in my location: lowe's, home depot, lumber liquidators, harbor freight, etc. I figure it will be 4 feet in length, but im not sure how tall the back should be. help? and web sites that answer my questions.
i meant stores, not stories. =]
more details: Um, I am trying to make it as cheap as possible, like wood wise.
My dad suggested using bolts too, so thats what I'm planing on using to put it together.

and I will use lacquer, so it stays nice, and not as weathered.

The cheapest choice is treated pine. If you select the pieces carefully (avoiding knots, twisted or warped pieces) and use an outdoor stain rather than lacquer, you'll get the cheapest but longest lasting result.

Cypress or white oak will make a very nice bench but you will need to seal the wood to extend its life. That is specially true for the legs where they come in contact with the ground or concrete.

Cedar will also work and is reasonably in priced. It tends to have splinters so you need to watch out for them. Again for a long life, sealing and varnishing the cedar will extend its life a good bit.

Lacquer is not really the best choice for out door protection. An exterior polyurethane or a spar varnish will hold up much better.

My husband and I just moved into a new home and the previous owners left a very nice wooden bench that I am planning to place alongside my garden. I would really love an outdoor seating area, but can't afford to purchase a new patio set. Does anyone out there have some creative ideas for building an outdoor table to go along with the bench?

yes...you could put together a table with a large garden urn with a sheet of tempered glass. This makes a nice "coffee table" for an informal seating area in your garden.

I have just recently buried my husband at Queen of Heaven outdoor garden mausoleum and I noticed in the bench where they put flowers there were some planters with the persons picture and dates of birth and death, but I do not know where to get this. The person at the cemetary said that a lot were home made or by a monument place but I thought someone would know. I have an idea but I want to know where to go to get the photo encased so I can glue on my outdoor planter

...choice wood is cedar....redwood....or pressure treated pine (let p.t. pine dry after the furniture is built, then coat with stain & varnish)
...and IMHO, I coat with spar varnish
...the varnish is marine grade and lasts
...you may prefer to paint bright colors, instead of varnish
...again, IMHO, if painting, use the p.t.pine, paint once the wood dries several days in good sun
...pine costs least, is very durable
...cedar costs more, for bare wood disease resistance
....redwood costs most, and is disease resistant

ONce again, IMHO, why paint over pretty wood grains? like cedar, so varnish over cedar, or prime and paint over pine
...exterior latex is thrifty
