What type of product should I put on them and how? They are both stained to look like redwood and are fading and drying out.

Clean them up with an oxyclean and water solution. Either apply and then power wash or apply and then scrub. After cleaning decide if the furniture needs to be sanded.

Then apply an outdoor deck stain. Behr (sold at Home Depot) has a nice redwood stain.

I want to make a copy of an old rotted bench. Of course in the UK, it will be subjected to much more damp than sun. What is the best wood to use?

Any suggestions for an unobtrusive finish?

Thanks to all who responded. i really feel that it is unfair to the rest to pick one, as each of them made a valuable contribution. But I have seen that leaving it to a public vote can be a disaster!

Classic "English"garden benches are often made of teak.
Insect & rot resistant but pricey.
White cedar would also be a good choice for same reasons.but is softer & will not last as long.
Recommend stainless steel screws to avoid staining the wood esp if using cedar which will eat up common fixings.
Either can be left unfinished & will go "silver "w/ time.
A marine supply store will have "teak oil" used on boats which hold up well & protect against sun & moisture.
Does not form a "skin" & is easily touched up .
They will also have "brighteners" to clean up before re -treating.

I'm getting ready to finish an old outdoor glider/bench. The wood is VERY dry. Should I rub this down with some kind of furniture oil before trying to stain it? The wood is so dry it is starting to crack a little in some places, and the surfaces are kind of textured.

Order of task.
1. Sand and fill/repair as necessary
2. Stain
3. Oil or apply other protective coat

I was thinking I have all the tools to start making cedar outdoor furniture like adirondack chairs, benches, love-seats, end tables, planter boxes, and gardening workstation tables. Does anyone think that these items would sale if I started advertising locally and bringing my products to farmers markets to start with and will this type of product sale in the winter time or mostly in the summer when outdoor living in. I live in northern California so the winters arn't all that bad.

cedar is a natural insect repellent and is usually expensive to purchase so maybe, they would sell but maybe incorporate some cheaper wood products of equal quality...good luck

I found designs in a book on how to build your own kitchen table and I was wondering would it be cheaper to build one or buy one? The same goes for a bookshelf or outdoor bench.

It depends on the quality. Generally store bought, mass produced furniture will be cheaper. Say you'll use 2/3 sheet of plywood on your project. You still have to buy the whole sheet up front. If it were being mass produced, you would get three units out of every two sheets. Multiply this with all materials including hardware, which is cheaper bought in quantity, and you have cheaper furniture at the store. Also, you'll need the right tools, and there is ALWAYS some other tool you could have.

But this isn't really about the cost. Nothing beats building and then using something you built yourself. By all means, try it. Set realistic goals, so you don't get overwhelmed and quit. Have fun.
