Ok, I have a cherry plywood (pressed wood) armoire that I want to repaint (white) to match other furniture. How do I go about preparing it? Do I sand, prime, and paint like I would with wood? Also, is oil based or latex paint better to use?
I also have a metal framed futon that I would like to repaint as well. Do I need to sand it? Do I paint w/ paint brush or spray paint?

this will be different than the previous answers but easier, first get a high adhesion primer ,I reccomend x-i-m , it is expensive but worth it , apply the x-i-m to the armiore and the futon frame, no need to sand or strip,the primer is so good it will give you excellent adhesion, let it dry about 6 hours and apply your top coat ,which should be an oil based industrial enamel...Valspar makes a very good anti rust enamel.

I'm in the process of priming and then painting my weathered, but still good metal lawn furniture...my wife likes the primed only chairs....if i just leave them primed, will it be ok without painting?

You and I both know that it she likes it you had better leave it, and I can't see any harm.

I'm thinking of repainting my walls and I have a glass desk with aluminum stands, as well as a similar TV stand. What wall color works best? Also, any suggestions for the color of the couch? Thanks.

The great thing about glass and metal furniture is that it goes with everything. It looks best with real intense colors. If you buy a black, grey or white couch the color choices are limitless! This way you can change your colors as it suits you and the furniture will go with it. My Hubby had a custom glass chrome table made in the 70s, and we still use it!

Here is a color wheel in case you decide to buy a colored couch. Then you can choice a complimentary color for the walls (Just look at the color opposite the couch color on the wheel).

I would like to paint over some metal furniture that currently has a powder coating. Can this be easily done? What is involved? What kind of paint works best?

I did it to my patio set which was powder coated and it is time consuming but can be done. First, inspect all of the joints, sometimes they use welds that rust and if that is the case wire brush off any loose pieces. Use a good cleaner and make certain any grease or dirt is removed prior to priming. I used the Rustoleum rust encapsulating and resisting primer even though my set is aluminum because the welds were all rusted. Then I used the Rustoleum metal paint and I chose the Textured Wrought Iron Black because the powder coating I went over had a pebbled texture and I didn't want to sand. I love it because it looks like new years later, doesn't rust and can be washed off with a hose. BTW, I do NOT recommend the Hammerite products, they do not encapsulate or resist rust and you will be repainting the set in a couple of years like I am repainting every piece I used it on. Another hint, invest a few dollars in the triggered spray gun attachment for the top of the spray paint. It really helps save your fingers and helps to give long, even sweeps. Also, maintain the distance suggested by the paint manufacturer using light coats to avoid runs and drips.
