The skelton wood of the market umbrella is fine, I just need to replace the fabric for the top.
Because the replacement cost more than a new one, I have already been through this several times.

Do I have to use the same type of cord ? Has anyone replaced this cord before or do they always toss the whole thing ? It's the umbrella type that cranks up with no pole in the middle . I still have the broken cord. Any suggestions would be appreciated .
Try feeding a small flexible wire through the path the cord was in. Make the wire long enough to go through the entire path. Tape new cord onto end of pull wire. Now pull wire with new cord taped on until end of cord comes out. Re tie to umbrella contact.

Thanks for the first answer, but they only sell ones for the metal frames - specifically Sunbrellas and they say they will not fit the standard wooden frame I have. Plus, the cost quite a bit! Might wind up buying a whole new umbrella, but what a waste!

Here is what I know. Very little in most cases but here goes. Patio umbrella is usually solid no sun light penetrates (casts a solid shadow) and will repel rain. Market umbrella is usually mesh and will cast a light shadow but will also let some sun through as well as rain if it happens. Hope this helps.
Soak it with water first then open it gradually until it opens completely, keeping it wet the whole time, then let it dry in the open position in the shade.
