My mom has this great iron patio furniture that has, over the years, rusted and I'm interested in fixing them up for her. I'd like to be able to do it as a mom/daughter project. Any ideas?

Unless you are unusually thorough, sanding or rubbing with steel wool will not remove all of the rust. If you do not remove all of the rust it will likely come back fairly quickly.
As others have pointed out, the absolute best way to remove the rust is by sand-blasting or bead-blasting but this is not a DIY project.
If you want to DIY, I would recommend you brush the furniture with a wire brush, apply naval jelly and wash off, dry thoroughly, lightly sand and immediately apply a rust inhibiting primer and coats of paint.
If you want the best result possible, find a shop that does powder-coating. They will generally blast off the rust and apply a baked on durable finish in an assortment of colors, generally for a reasonable price. We had this done to a set of old furniture and the results far exceeded our expectations

I've recently purchased an old wrought iron patio set and would like to restore it to a new-looking black finish.

First, you will need to remove the old finish plus all of the rust that is on there. You need a bare metal to start a good finish with.

You can go to Sears and buy a sand blaster for about $75 or rent one for about $7 a day . Add sand to it and blast off the old finish and rust too. I took an old bench I had to a fabrication shop here locally and they sand blasted it clean for me for $15. Shops that weld and do "ironwork" also do sand blasting.

Once clean, its ready to start finishing it. The best finish around is that on Automobiles. No question about it, its the best and most durable and costs are very reasonable for such a finish.

So buy a quart of Automotive primer. Spray the set with a coat or two using an ordinary spray gun.

Then apply the base coat color. Here you have a big choice of colors, but you say black, so spray it with base coat black.

Then spray on the clear coat Polyurethane with a bit of hardener in it. Give it two coats of this finish.

You will have the best set around and it will last for at least 20 years out in the sun, rain, snow, anywhere. The total cost of this is about the same as going to Lowes and buying some kind of a paint that will surely not stay on there because it is not resistant to the sun, rain, and weather like an auto paint is.

I have small areas of rust showing up on both. The Iron gate is coated but in tiny areas of the weld there are spots of rust. The furniture is coated white and the rust appears minute areas. How do I maintain?

The easiest way is with rust converter. It's a spray or brush on product that chemically converts rust into an inert primer like finish that can be painted over and prevents future rusting. Edit: Note, the rust converter will not work on surfaces that are not rusted so in your case I'd recommend a can and a small brush just to cover the areas that need protection.

I'm using rustoluem gloss paint. I want to get a clean looking finish.

I used the Rustoleum wrought iron textured paint. First, I wired brushed off any loose paint and rust. Then I used the Rustoleum metal primer that seals in and prevents future rust. Then, used the textured paint. I spray painted this time. I found that I got better coverage, more even coats, less dripping and it lasted longer than when I used the same product and applied it with brushes and rollers. (I did it last year and won't have to do it again this year.)

the best way is either to tie them all together when not using, or seal them to the floor.
