I've recently purchased an old wrought iron patio set and would like to restore it to a new-looking black finish.

First, you will need to remove the old finish plus all of the rust that is on there. You need a bare metal to start a good finish with.

You can go to Sears and buy a sand blaster for about $75 or rent one for about $7 a day . Add sand to it and blast off the old finish and rust too. I took an old bench I had to a fabrication shop here locally and they sand blasted it clean for me for $15. Shops that weld and do "ironwork" also do sand blasting.

Once clean, its ready to start finishing it. The best finish around is that on Automobiles. No question about it, its the best and most durable and costs are very reasonable for such a finish.

So buy a quart of Automotive primer. Spray the set with a coat or two using an ordinary spray gun.

Then apply the base coat color. Here you have a big choice of colors, but you say black, so spray it with base coat black.

Then spray on the clear coat Polyurethane with a bit of hardener in it. Give it two coats of this finish.

You will have the best set around and it will last for at least 20 years out in the sun, rain, snow, anywhere. The total cost of this is about the same as going to Lowes and buying some kind of a paint that will surely not stay on there because it is not resistant to the sun, rain, and weather like an auto paint is.

I want to get a bistro set for our front courtyard and I don't know which material to pick. I heard cast aluminum is rust resistant and lasts longer. However, I live in a very windy area, and I am afraid it won't be heavy enough. There's too much concrete going on in that area, so I don't want concrete furniture, either. Any opinions or suggestions?

Aluminium is much lighter than cast iron, but you would still need hurricane force winds to shift it. As long as the base of the table is as wide as the top, you shouldn't have any problem with the wind tipping it over. The aluminum is also much easier to move around for rearranging.

Which do you prefer? This would be for a dining set in cast aluminum that looks like wrought iron and would be used on a wooden deck (not a patio). I like the look of dining chairs (i.e., with legs) because I prefer a traditional style with my old house, but I'm wondering if swivel chairs would be more comfortable and practical on a deck (no legs to get caught in the cracks). Opinions?
One more thing -- swivel chairs cost about twice as much as dining chairs.

I agree with the person who suggested a mix of the 2 kinds of chairs if you have a table large enough for 6 chairs. If you are just getting four chairs, having them all the same will probably look better. Swivel chairs can be very comfortable for just sitting, but I always feel like I have to lean forward uncomfortably to eat at the table because they tend to tilt back slightly. So it really depends, are you planning on using the set mostly for sitting at the table and eating, or for sitting and relaxing? I've never had a problem with the legs on non-swivel chairs getting caught in the deck cracks--but it is something to consider if the cracks on your deck are wider, or the legs are particularly small. We live in the mid-west and want to purchase a set that will last a long time.

The best I have seen yet is a PLASTIC wicker that my parents have. Plastic or PVC holds up for years. I can't even remember when I got mine and it was used when I got it. I live in FL and the weather here destroys everything.
Cast aluminum or aluminum will last a long time as well. Although it is typically painted and the paint will peel off after a few years. Aluminum does rust, it just rusts white (Aluminum Oxide).
Stay away from wicker, wood and cast iron. They won't last for more than a few seasons.

My housemate has a set that she called painted wrought iron, but it is definitely not wrought iron. I looked up this set on the internet and found that the material is something called "wrought aluminum" - it is lighter weight and cheaper and flimsier and probably why it broke in the first place. She thinks it can be soldered to fix it, but I think it would not work well. I said I think you can solder on iron, but if it had been iron it probably wouldn't have broken in the first place. I think it is trash now but she thinks it is fixable and worth fixing. Who is right?

Wrought or rather cast aluminum can be heli-arc welded. Call a welding shop and ask if they do heli-arc welding
