Hi - I have an old wooden garden table that is looking very tired and I would like to get it looking nicer - any suggestions welcome - do I sand it first or just apply stain/varnish?

I scrub the table first, using good old scouring powder and elbow grease. Use a traditional stiff scrubbing brush. This gets rid of the growths.

Sanding might be appropriate, but use a medium to fine grade and go easy on enthusiasm!

The problem, I find, with lacquers and cuprinol is that, in the sun, the lacquers can lift and cuprinol looks like garden fence!

I use Briwax to tart up our garden table. I apply it with a shoe brush, rubbing it in until I get a nice satin finish. Two applications last the summer. Winter rains will wash it out, but the solvent in the wax inhibits mould and lichens.

You can buy Briwax at most DIY centres.

my garden table has been treated with wooden stain but there is wax crayon on it off a family members child.
I was a very expensive table so can anyone please tell me how to remove the crayon please.

Use the magic eraser blocks - they also work on walls etc. Try a small bit first.

Plastic doesn't wear too well. My favourite garden furniture is the wooden type. It lasts for years if you apply some wood oil to it once a year & it looks lovely. It can be expensive, but I got my set from my nearest IKEA store (www.ikea.co.uk) & it was cheaper than some plastic sets I've seen in garden centres etc!

I've only just brought this set from Robert Dyas (UK), haven't used it, need a pvc type cover for it. However, will it be too late to take of this hardwood, now its been wet or can i still treat it & cover it when the weather is dry!! Typical british weather!
what i meant to say will it be harder to take care of this type of hardwood now its been soaking wet

Your furniture will be fine, cover it over as soon as possible so it doesn't get any wetter, if you can move it into a garage or shed and let it dry slowly (If it dries too quickly you may get small cracks). Once it has dried out makes sure the wood is clean by rubbing down with wire wool and white spirit, then give it a couple of coats of teak oil. This will bring back its colour and help keep it waterproof in future. You will need to reapply the teak oil every year (Autumn) or twice a year if left out in the winter (Spring and Autumn)...
