A garden table and a bench cost $662 combined. The garden table costs $88 less than the bench. What is the cost of the garden table?

Although my math formula was a bit different – I came up with the same answer.
Table: $287
Bench: $375

662 – 88 = 574
574 ÷ 2 = 287 (cost of table)
287 + 88 = 375 (cost of bench)
287 + 375 = $662 (Total cost of both items)

Also can you leave a picnic bench outside all year? does it need some sort of cover?

What's best for you depends on where you live and how much you want to spend. For me cost is a big issue, and frankly, you can get some great furniture at stores like Lowes or even Walmart for the lowest price possible. Here is what to look for:

Easy to clean: Glass table tops or similar hard surfaces that won't stain look better over time than wood which bleaches or shows rings. Buy only what you can clean with the garden hose.

Avoid wood: For furniture that says out in the sun and rain, wood is not the best choice. It will discolor, crack, warp and lose its beauty quickly if exposed each day to the elements. If you want to build a picnic table yourself, use the new composite lumber made out of recycled plastics. Though it is heavy, it lasts forever, doesn't get splinters and takes extremes of hot and cold, wet and dry.

Exploit cushions: Bright fabric cushions can turn a poor looking chair, chaise or love seat into a real fashion statement in the garden. Cushions also protect you from a seat that has turned very hot or cold due to extreme weather. Cushions are the universal problem solver you can sew yourself or buy cheaply at discount stores.

Mudkip's method gives you the correct answer (450), probably using the method you're supposed to use.

A quicker method is to divide the combined cost by 2 giving you 430
As the bench and table are $40 apart you can say that each one is $20 away from the average.
The bench costs more, so do 430+20 giving you $450

I am going to cut down a Rhododendron tree in the garden and would like to re-use the wood in the garden (e.g. garden chairs, table, bench, etc.)

What seasoning / treatment / etc do I need to carry out on the wood after cutting so that it will not rot or degrade once I have made into garden furniture?

cut it into the sections you want, melt some wax and dip the ends and store in a cool dry place for about a year, this prevents checking (cracks) then bark the wood and put together whatever your building and spray or paint on a good wood sealer clear or colored or you could stain it then seal it... good luck...
