we have a concrete covered patio in the backyard, and my husband wants to do some kind of cool stone out there. Do we have to get rid of the concrete first? or is there a way to just lay the stone on top of it? We're doing our research since he will be doing this himself.
maybe something like this http://www.gardendesignco.com/i/dp/stone _patio_garden_lighting.jpg

I just got a Charcoal Grill, and a Chimney starter from Weber. Because of how the grill I have works, the chimney starter will smoke up the thermometer on the grill cover. I grill on my brick patio at the back of my house. I am thinking, I could just light the chimney starter on the patio, but I figure it'll probably discolor the bricks from the heat? I was thnking about buying a few bricks from the local garden store and lighting the chimney on top of those so they can take all of the heat for 15 minutes before I pour them into the grill. Is this safe? The bricks can handle this heat?
use fire brick they can take that kind of heat.

I've had two answers from electricians - one says armoured cable and the other says conduit.
Obviously we want to be safe and legal. The wires will run round the back of a patio & up walls etc.
Thanks for your help.
***NOTE*** The regulations are very different for the U.S. vs the U.K. The below is for the U.S., per the National Electrical Code
You've got a couple options-
-UF Cable -- "romex" rated for direct burial - must be buried at least 24" deep
-Non-metallic Conduit - looks like grey sprinkler pipe - 18" deep
-Water-tight flex conduit - 18" deep
-Rigid Metal Conduit - heavy walled metal conduit (not EMT) - 6" deep
-Low-voltage Cable - looks like heavy lamp cord - 6" deep
For garden lighting, I'd strongly recommend a low-voltage system. If you've got an outdoor outlet, low-voltage is an easy DIY project. If no convenient outlet, you might want to get an electrician to mount a junction box in a convenient location for the transformer and timer.
note: if you decide to run conduit (and it might make sense at least to the edge of the patio, to supply an outlet and possibly 120v overhead lights), do NOT run NM cable ("romex") thru the conduit. While it's not specifically prohibited by the National Electrical Code, it's not standard practice, and it would be a huge pain in the *** to try to pull romex through a long run of conduit.

I've started a small vegetable garden on my back patio- I want to grow tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, onions, zucchini, and various herbs. I've noticed that the patio only gets about four hours of direct sunlight daily, and I'm worried that this will not be enough for heathly growth and yields. These plants are all in containers, so they are able to be moved if necessary to maximize light exposure. But, I was wondering if I fit my patio light with a couple flourescent bulbs, will this help make up for the lack of direct light? Will the plants be healthier with a couple of extra hours of supplemental light from the flourescents, or will the sunlight be enough?
If you can move them so that they get at least 6 hours of sun a day, that would be enough. If you can't, then supplemental fluorescent lighting will help. Keep in mind that you don't want them on all night long, and that yields will be less from container-grown plants, anyway.
My mum is going to paint the patio in our back garden either 'Brick red' (kind of dark) or 'Sandstone' (a creamy skin like colour). We have a wooden bench that has been painted light blue and the brickwork is painted white.
She wanted terracotta (sort of an in between the 2 ) but the store doesn't stock it keeps asking me but I have no idea what looks good colour-wise, help!
If your mum wants terracotta, the storeowner may be able to get it in for her.
If this isn't an option, the brick red would probably be the closest, and patio paving paint does fade eventually and would make it look a bit softer. (sandstone is a bit bland and boring).
That would look great with the light blue furniture and white brickwork.
Maybe she could also make cushions in a colour similar to the paving paint, to link it all together.

...Solar Lights for Your Bills Solution | tayana

I believe every housewife including you probably worried about the ever increasing price of electricity. If you want to save on your energy bill, then solar powered lights are a great alternative. This is a cost effective way of illuminating your home’s outdoor areas. How does it work? The first versions of solar lighting, use solar cells that did not produce ample power for a long period of time. As with everything solar lighting has evolved, newer technology uses LED (light emitting diode) lamps that offer much more powerful.
Since solar lights are not as powerful as electric powered fixtures, they are better used for outdoor decorative lighting. Some places you can use them include walkways, landscape borders, patio and deck areas, as well as gardens. It’s important to have a well thought out plan before you begin, you can even do a quick sketch before hand so you have an idea of how to place the lamps.
