My mum is going to paint the patio in our back garden either 'Brick red' (kind of dark) or 'Sandstone' (a creamy skin like colour). We have a wooden bench that has been painted light blue and the brickwork is painted white.

She wanted terracotta (sort of an in between the 2 ) but the store doesn't stock it keeps asking me but I have no idea what looks good colour-wise, help!

If your mum wants terracotta, the storeowner may be able to get it in for her.

If this isn't an option, the brick red would probably be the closest, and patio paving paint does fade eventually and would make it look a bit softer. (sandstone is a bit bland and boring).

That would look great with the light blue furniture and white brickwork.
Maybe she could also make cushions in a colour similar to the paving paint, to link it all together.

There is a home near me that has very nice informal gardens along their drive way - lots of patches of flowers. They have things scattered along the way that are painted solid white. One is an old iron bed headstead, another is an old fashion bicycle with a basket. There is something else but I can't remember what it is at the moment.

It is not over done - I don't know if you can picture it but it is really cute and makes you think of days gone by.

Also, When my dad wears out his leather work boots, his wife puts little flowering plants in them and tucks them among big landscaping plants around their decks. Its cute.

some real color but don't want the furniture to look tacky. I like things to look natural since I live on a river and the landscape is all indigenous to the area. One bench over-looks the river, two others are in a patio area. I also have a picnic table that could use to be re-painted, it's currently a dense red. If I paint, do I need to prime first? Any color suggestions?

There is a perfect paint for your project and it Olympic paint stain. It comes in a ton of colors, shades and stain pigments. You don't need to prime, but should sand any areas that are gray, peeling or loose. I love this stuff and have found it long lasting, durable, weather resistant and fade resistant. It is great out in the sun and everything I've used it on gets hit by the automatic sprinklers almost daily and it doesn't get discolored like other paints or stains I have used. I got it at Lowes.

What decorative, creative, interesting or whimsical little something do you have in your yard that isn't a plant ? Something you put there yourself.

I have a statue of St Francis which is about 3 feet tall, and a black Asian carp that is about 1 1/2 feet long and stands about 8 inches tall.
A sandstone plaque of some sort of face on the fence and 4 musically tuned wind chimes and one bamboo "chatter" windchime.

This morning I found a ceramic rabbit by the carp. Two things come to mind, someone put it there as a nice surprise for me, or whoever stole my 6 hostas left it to taunt me. Its where the hostas were.

I used to have half an acre and I was in heaven, even with the pool I had my own "park" ! Now I have a postage sized back yard, its enough for me, and the cat likes it.

My husband and I just moved into a new home and the previous owners left a very nice wooden bench that I am planning to place alongside my garden. I would really love an outdoor seating area, but can't afford to purchase a new patio set. Does anyone out there have some creative ideas for building an outdoor table to go along with the bench?

yes...you could put together a table with a large garden urn with a sheet of tempered glass. This makes a nice "coffee table" for an informal seating area in your garden.
