I recently moved into my first house and the previous owner had lots of high maintenance vegetation. I'd like to spend time cultiuvating a produce garden and not really worrying about flowers etc but I would like some things to spruce up the yard. What are some examples of plants that need little to no care once placed in the ground that can liven up my yard a bit?

-Also, I've been told that plants native to my area are easier so just for your information: I'm in Southeast Tennessee.

My son said he will build an outdoor running around area for my cat. I do not know what they are called.
Where it is like a huge caged area through the garden for the cat but keeps the local birds safe.
Do you know anything about them so I can have some idea of what is involved?

Here are a couple. I've never built any myself as we have an enclosed front porch on my house. It depends how much of a carpenter he is really and how handy he is. I'll find some that are easier since I don't know how handy he is :)

I'm in the 5A-6B plant hardiness zone of Canada. I have a garden on a slight incline about twelve feet wide and five feet deep. It is currently quite rocky, it appears gravel was added underneath canvass for drainage (I assume) and then dirt dumped over it. Should I dig all of this out and start over? There are some perennials, (rose bushes - very ugly) that I'd like to pull out, and hostas I planted last year. What type of shrubs, perennials and flowers would do well in this area? I am looking for easy care type stuff, but I like pretty flowers. I also prefer wild flowers or those that look wild. I do not like the rose bushes, they are very difficult to make look pretty and are quite thorny making access to the rest of the garden difficult as they are so overgrown. Any tips for the small hill garden would be appreciated as well.

You could make the area into a rock garden. Suggestions for plants: cranesbill, stonecress, bellflower, gentian, lantana, salvia, sedum, diasca, scilla, onamental onion, crocus, allium, fleabane, phlox, violas, and herbs. Incorporate a few large rocks or use smaller ones as an edging. Removing the roses sounds like a good idea if you don't like them. Plant something that will make you smile every time you see it. okay so if i have an indoor church wedding i have to pay for flowers and decorations, but if i have an outdoor summer garden wedding i don't have to have flowers, but i have to pay for chairs, so in the long run which is cheaper and easier? i can have the reception on site at the outdoor garden spot, but the church doesn't have a reception hall, or any kind of place to have the reception, so it'd have to be in a different place if that matters at all.

i'm starting to think maybe the outdoor wedding will cost the same as the church wedding after we pay for the chairs, so what are your opinions on this ladies? any experience, which will be easier and cheaper?
i should have added that, i do go to church every week 4 x a week, i go to all the functions, he doesn't ever go to church, but my church is really small, seats 50 very uncomfortably, there are only 30 people that attend regularly, so we don't have that many pews anymore, they removed the ones that never get used to make a big play area for the children in the back of the church.

A garden wedding sounds very, very lovely - if the weather is going to be ok. Reception venue right there too, great!. Why not borrow the chairs from your local community type centre?, or ask the church if can borrow theirs?, sports venue chairs?. I would love to go to a garden wedding, how special!

i'm starting a garden outside my home for the first time. a true beginner. i need some EASY TO GROW, semi-tall, colorful flowers to grow in outdoor pots in partial sunny areas.

Lots of things to choose from really. How about Gerber daisies that come in a variety of colors and bloom through autumn. Or day lilies, which have thin leaves and fill out into a nice flourishing bush? They last til autumn, too. (They'd be taller than the daisies). There's Black-eyed Susans (a dark brown center surrounded by deep yellow petals)..they grow quite tall.

Remember to Miracle Grow them and water pots more frequently than if they were in the ground as moisture evaporates faster. All these are perennials, which means they'll return every year to blossom.
Get pots of different flowers and stagger them for a nice look, Throw in a Vinca Vine too if you want for something to drape over the edge of the pot.

Asian lilies come in vibrant colors, too (a perennial) and have large, trumpet-like flowers. Blooms will last for about 30 days on those...but what a nice fragrance!!

And then there's mums which bloom from late summer through late fall--they really grow huge in width, so keeping them potted will probably contain them. But it's nice to have flowers blooming all year long.
