How can I prevent my patio furniture cover from blowing off?
IMG_6518_sm

I have a patio set (table and four chairs) on my deck and I put a canvas cover on it. It's pretty heavy and durable, but it keeps blowing off on windy days. Any tips for keeping it from blowing off? I guess I could put huge rocks on top of the table or something, but I think that wouldn't look too attractive. Thanks!

Maybe some clothes pins would do the trick. Push to shove, use the rocks. You could paint them with fish or something to make them look cute.

How can I get rid of numerous garden orb spiders that cover my landscaping every summer?

We get over a hundred spiders that spin webs all around our yard, in all the bushes, trees, and on our deck furniture. I am looking for ideas on how we can eliminate them. I believe they are garden orb spiders. It makes it impossible to enjoy our yard and deck all summer. They don't come into the house so that is not a problem, just the outside.

Wow, are you lucky. They eat so many insects. If the webs are on furniture or across paths, take the webs down when the spiders are not in them. They will move elsewhere. Although doing this may kill the spiders anyway, because many spiders eat their webs in order to reuse the silk. Silk takes alot of energy to produce, and by eating the old silk, the spider saves energy and physical resources.
I am scared to death of spiders. But I won't kill them outside.

Where could I purchase mosquito net curtains for a covered deck?

I have a hot tub just at the end of my 16'X13' covered deck. I think mosquito net curtains that are fould on gazeebos would be perfect for a semi private look to my deck. I have seen the curtains I want on gazeebos in patio furniture displays, but cannot find the curtains by themselves. They have finished edges(with canvas material) and graumets in order to hang on a dowel rod.

Here's a website where you can order mosquito net curtains. They offer a few options: you can have them custom made if you prefer, or you can buy the fabric and do it yourself.

What should I use to cover deck trellis to shield from rain/debris?

Hi,

We have a large deck that we are refinishing and about a 12' x 10' section of the deck has a trellis covering it. The trellis simply consists of 4 posts and horizontal slats, so it is mostly open. We have recently purchased some expensive outdoor wicker furniture and a table with a propane fire pit...so I would like to shield this area from rain and falling leaves, helicopters, etc from the huge tree above it...as it would be our only "covered" area.

My problem is that i'm not sure what to use...I don't want it to be ugly (tarp), but I also want it to be effective. I found a sunshade here: http://www.kingcanopy.com/product/pc-200 11-12 . I'm thinking that since the big tree blocks a good deal of rain it might do the trick. Anyone have experience with how much water they repel? Any other suggestions as to what i should go with here?

Thanks
John

You could use the corrugated fiber glass panels on top of the trellis. They will protect from sun and rain. They come in assorted colors too. I would be very careful as to where you put the fire-pit though.

  • AWNING » Blog Archive » Deck Cleaning and Wood Deck Stains – A Do ...

Looking out your back window you decide that it’s once again time to get your deck ready for the coming season. The grill still has its winter cover and the patio furniture is stacked into the corner. You can envision how the deck is going to look when its finished but that small hollow in your stomach reminds you how cumbersome deck cleaning and staining can be. If you use the right types of products, the task can be performed much more simply. The key to making a finish last is all in the preparation work you do before you apply that first drop of stain.

Deck Stain or Sealer: How Do I Choose?

Exterior wood is subject to damage from the elements. The constant cycle of moisture and sun drying will cause deck boards to warp, check, cup and splinter. It is essential not only to try and seal out moisture but also to use an oil based staining product to keep the wood conditioned. Think of a drop of water placed onto your skin. Once that water evaporates, the moisturizing effect is cancelled. This simplified analogy is akin to putting water based (or water borne) staining and sealing products on your deck. Using the same analogy, now think about placing a drop of baby oil onto your skin. The oil acts as an emollient keeping your skin more pliable. This is why we recommend using oil-based products for wooden decks. Oil acts as a better moisture repellant and will retard the drying effect, which causes premature aging. Oil based sealers will add years of life to your deck.
