paint that says it can be painted right over rust. The table isn't rusty. My question? Do I need to do anything to prep that set before painting?

Sand it lightly to give it some "tooth" so the paint will stick.
I'd give it a coat or 5 of satin or gloss varnish on top, just
to protect the paint and help it last longer. Remember to paint and or varnish underneath so the rust stays away.

My idea is to have the children in the class each decorate a tile and then set those tiles on a metal/iron table. What medium should I have the children use? Does the tile need to be kilned? Can I get away with acrylics and a protective gloss? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am a beginner and craft impaired. Thanks

What a great idea! If you don't want the expense and are pushed for time I wouldn't use the kiln method. I have an idea -try pre-glazed tiles(Home Depot, Lowes) and use sharpies to color them. They have sets with 25-30 different colors and different size tips that you could probably find at Michael's or an office supply store. Good luck!

There are so many lovely lovely bistros with al fresco dining here, that's hard to decide which one is my favorite.

I love the Rose Cafe on Rose in Venice. It's a bakery / art gallery / bistro all rolled into one, and has a very chilaxed environment and yummy food. It's also great for people spotting. We saw Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio there last week!

A Cow Jumped Over the Moon on Rodeo in Beverly Hills has a lovely patio area.

Bistro de L'Hermitage in Culver City is a delightful Parisian bistro in Culver City with outdoor seating.

I want to get a bistro set for our front courtyard and I don't know which material to pick. I heard cast aluminum is rust resistant and lasts longer. However, I live in a very windy area, and I am afraid it won't be heavy enough. There's too much concrete going on in that area, so I don't want concrete furniture, either. Any opinions or suggestions?

Aluminium is much lighter than cast iron, but you would still need hurricane force winds to shift it. As long as the base of the table is as wide as the top, you shouldn't have any problem with the wind tipping it over. The aluminum is also much easier to move around for rearranging.
