I have a small city yard (maybe 200 sq ft or less, haven't measured yet) that is badly in need of new grass. I'd like to lay sod. I know you have to dig up old grass, till, roll, etc., but is this something that I should hire someone to do, or can I do it myself on a weekend (renting equipment from Home Depot)? Also, are some types of sod better than others? (I live in Wisconsin).
Definitely measure but that small of a yard can be a DYI project. You basically have the idea of dig up old, till, roll and then put down the new.
I do recommend having a helper for the digging (tiring job). Tilling one person, rolling one person.
I like to add a layer of fresh top soil (quality clean fill will do).
Do not buy the cheapest sod you can find! Around here you get stuff that has been cut out of the ground too long and the outer exposed pieces are dryed out and dying (you get dead patches).
Types of sod?? No types of grass. Talk to a landscaper and look at the different types and choose one you like. Then find a reputible sod dealer to buy from.
Idea, find a place where their laying new sod and go watch as much of the job as you can, learn and ask questions.

Also you could check out the Lowe's and Home Depots. There are some in different spots in town.
There is a tile outlet down off of I-35 near South Park Meadows.
It would help to know which part of town you are in.
Also depending on the size of the project on which you are working, I'd recommend the site in the resources for free materials as well as the Yahoo! group Freecycle Austin.
Looking to raise money for a new school playground. This will also be used by the whole community as the town playground. The current playground has flooding during the spring and the equipment is unsafe. All the work is being done by volunteers but the sod and pea gravel and playground equipment along with a new drainage system will be around 100,000. The community has been donating all it can, but we need other sources. Any ideas out there?
Hold a play-a-thon for the community, both adults and children. Organize games such as tag, hide and seek, capture the flag, dodgeball...you know...children's games from our playground days. Have the community pay or pledge to participate and have groups selling drinks and baked goods on the side to raise even more money. Companies could even pay to sponsor some of the games.

How times have changed since the company started. Fairgreen began with one farm in the Markham area, but now grows sod on over 1,600 acres across 18 different farms. In the early days of the business, the act of harvesting sod was very labour–intensive. Because it was hand–cut and rolled onto trucks, a crew was able to harvest only about 3,500 rolls of sod per day, if conditions were good. Now, with mechanized harvesters, Fairgreen can harvest over 35,000 rolls of sod per day.
The company does more than just grow sod, of course. It offers everything needed for lawn care, including seed, top soil, triple mix, fertilizer, and their own garden blend of peat, manure, compost and mineral soil.
Fairgreen delivers its products across much of the GTA. As they note on their Website, their trucks “are equipped with turf tire forklifts which enable them to travel across lawns and driveways” so that bags of soil can be placed exactly where they are needed.
