i wanna grow some plants indoor inside of an aquarium for the greenhouse effect and there are about 4 plants in there and i want flourescent tube lights but i wanna know if a flourescent light hood for an aquarium will work if not tell me the best light for cheap that can grow plants well !!!

It would work, but be sure to get lights that supply the mix of colors you want for your plants to grow. They will probably measure it in degrees kelvin. Try to get bulbs around 5000K to 15000K. Any farther and it'll give them too much blue light and not enough of the rest.

I know that if you have plants indoor, grow lights are supposed to provide what the plants should be receiving from the sun, if planted outside.

My question is, if I put grow lights on crops that are already planted outside (for example tomatoes), will this extra light have a good or bad result? perhaps reduce the time needed to harvest the tomatoes?

Theoretically, if you use grow lights on your plants at night, you could make them bigger, since they will be able to photosynthesize for more hours, gathering more energy. Foods grown far north, where there is virtually no night time this time of year, can grow huge.

As an example, the large vegetables that the hobbits were holding in the "Lord of the Rings" movie were grown in Alaska.

But trying to provide the extra light through grow lights on outside plants is pale compared to the photos provided by the sun. Plus - your electric bill, especially if you're doing more than a couple plants, would make the endeavor pretty expensive.

Might be interesting for a controlled experiment - but impractical for general production.

I have s greenhouse attached to my house and i wanna use the grow lights to grow aloe vera, because people buy from me because when an aloe leaf sheds of i take it and put it in the freezer and i sell the aloe gel by the pound!

The red light does increase flowering, however it's only one part of the whole flowering procedure in the plant. Colorado State University's floriculture program tried building a red fiberglass greenhouse to determine if they could increase flowering. It was a bust.

If you want to cover all bases you can get both warm and cool florescent tubes. This is a far cheaper way to go than to buy the grow tubes or grow lights. You realize you need to have the lights down within 12 inches of the plants, not just on the ceiling. In fact with African Violets I had the lights down within 6 inches.

I have not tried the new bulb type florescent lights.

I'm really not sure.. my mom wants to start a indoor garden thingy and her birthday is coming up so i thought grow lights would be a good gift.. I don't know what I need to get.

Regular shop lights from Walmart/ Lowe's /Maynard's for well under $20 complete. They will grow any kind of plant she wants. Make sure the florescent bulbs are set close to the plants and leave them on for about 16 hours a day. They are about 4 foot long. If you want to get a timer you wont even have to turn it off and on. Next birthday you can get her a heater. You don't even have to buy gro-lights. Just the regular ones they use in garages etc. I've been using them for years without any problems. They plug into your sockets. I have 4 pepper plants from last summer that are producing right now in midwinter. Flowers will bloom. Plants can be started beginning next month for planting in the outside garden. She can grow herbs and any house plant she desires. Give a hug for me.

Im looking for plant grow lights for my home. Any idea where to find some at a good price? Also, if I use a mixture of floureceant and incandesceant do I need the plant grow lights?

Home Depot or Lowes, they have them and their prices are reasonable..
