If you want a reliable company who is paying all their tax and has £10 million public liability insurance expect to pay about £25/hour per man. I always price by the job so don't feel cheated if you get quoted £200 and 4 men are there for 2 hours (ie 8 man hours). One man band outfits who are not paying VAT, Tax etc and are uninsured will be cheaper.

As you can probably tell I know nothing of how businesses are run but I am keen to learn.
Example: Say I own a little gardening firm, with 5 of us working from two vans ('Alpha Gardeners,'). After a while we 've got enough money to buy out our local competitors ('Bravo Gardeners'). How does it work? Do I offer the rival boss a lump sum to take over his firm?
If so, can Bravo Gardeners carry on trading under that name, with the original staff and vans, or do I buy them new Alpha Gardeners equipment? Do the two simply get treated as one company regardless of what they call themselves, seeing as they now have a singular owner?
Thanks!
I assume Bravo Gardeners are not listed on any stock exchange. In which case you will need to make contact with the owner of Bravo Gardeners and agree an in principle sum for the business subject to your accountants checking his books (if the financial worth of the company bothers you which it may not if it is a small competitor).
The only other thing to do will be appoint an accountant to sort out the paperwork, pay the money and hey presto Bravo Gardeners is yours!
You can merge them into one company with whatever name you choose or have them continue trading as separate entities. It is really up to you.

Don't want to go through the expense of renting "tearing out" machines to get rid of bamboo and brush in vacant field. Does anyone know of a "home remedie" such as (I heard of using ) salt (?) or something that may not be a chemical if there is such a thing. I am sure there must be farmers or gardeners who would know of something that they use so as not to contaminate the soil with a chemical. If all else fails, I will have to contact the Department of Agriculture or my local Extension Service of Rutgers School of agriculture for a possible solution. Thanx!
Controlled burn. Prescribed or controlled burning (back burning) is a technique sometimes used in forest management, farming, or prairie restoration. Fire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology and controlled fire can be a tool for foresters. Controlled burning stimulates the germination of some desirable forest trees, thus renewing the forest. Some seeds, such as sequoia, remain dormant until fire breaks down the seed coating.
In industrialized countries, controlled burning is usually overseen by fire control authorities for regulations and permits. The party responsible must delineate the intended time and place. Obtaining a permit may not limit liability if the fire burns out of control.
I believe I many be able to get certain tax deductions on fuel, equipment etc. Can anyone tell me more? This is all new to me, so keep it basic!

I would probably stick with the car I have, which is for personal use too
Other posters are correct, but Paul is not correct when he states that expenditure has to be 'necessary' for the business - this test does not apply for self employmnet. As the business owneer, it is you who decides what is necessary to run your business. If we were both gardeners, I might decide that my van had to be painted with my name, but you might decide not - however, the painting of my van would still be an allowable deduction for tax purposes.
HMRC offer free self employment seminars and your local Business Link will also help.
we have been told that our half hour lunch break must be taken in our work van on site.We are gardeners using grass cutting equipment, planting plants , applying weedkillers all the council supply is hand wipes to take dirt off our hands. We are not paid for our lunch breaks and have been told that traveling from site to our depot is waisting company time so lunch breaks must be taken on site can anyone see if this is breaking health and safety laws
spelling mistake sorry i meant canteen
Report the company to your local government agency (if you are in the United States). If you are not being paid for your lunch, it is against federal law for them to tell you where you have to eat. You can go anywhere you want during your unpaid break. I don't know much about the legality of your health concern, but it is free to talk to a lawyer, or call OSHA and inquire.

All world articles » A Shed is a Garden Essential
Gardens can come in many shapes, forms and sizes, and many of these varied gardens are admired by a lot of people bar the people that have developed them. It is true that whilst a plot of land can be called a garden it takes a lot of work and development by a keen gardener to create something that is truly relaxing and beautiful. It is also true that although we have hands, essentially garden tools and specially developed garden equipment are needed in order to perform those tasks that people are just unable to do themselves. It is also very true that an essential to help maintain the condition of these garden tools is a garden shed.
Whilst leaving the garden spade, shovel, lawnmower and even the gardening gloves lying around seems all well and good, it isn’t. Sheds provide a dry and resistant space to store all these types of equipment, they can easily be kept in order whilst also becoming a lot more accessible and easy to find. Furthermore you equipment will effectively stay in good, clean condition and be used over and over again in the future, without having to fork out the extra money to by replacements. Sheds can be purchased in many shapes and sizes at very affordable and reasonable prices. Garden Sheds can also be used to store other equipment such as children’s out games and activity sets, as well as bikes and garden patio chair and table sets. All you have to do is lock it up safely with a padlock and chain and have everything stored away for when you next want to use it. If you are worried about how a shed will look in your garden, you do not have to purchase a large model; instead you can purchase a suitably sized shed and place it in the corner of your garden or at the end, somewhere where it can go unnoticed out of view. None the less a shed is essential and a great way to de-clutter the house of any other bits and bobs you may have lying around.
